Because America has been ethnically diverse for centuries. Even before diversity was cool, America was a mixed up bunch of Brits, Irish, Germans, Scots, Poles, Africans, French, Native Americans, etc, etc, etc. As a result, a large amount of Americans don't have a single predominant ethnicity.
