My iPhone 4S was amazing on AT&T. Then I guess I went to T-Mobile, and the speeds are amazing (in San Diego). It's a shame that iOS 7 killed the iPhone series for me, as for T-Mobile where I currently live at, it sucks major donkey balls.

The start screen would actually be pretty nice if it at least optionally only covered a small portion of the left half of the screen.

I quite like the idea of having the Start Menu as the desktop itself. The desktop icons being metro icons.
squeegee !first/o5zA joined in and replied with this 12 years ago, 1 hour later, 3 months after the original post[^][v]#474,054
are the metro live tiles or whatever even useful? What are they, just icons? I've got 7 still and i haven't dicked with 8, but it all looks like a bunch of useless noise to me. like a bunch of "eye candy" that has limited functionality or to replace simple things like folders or icons. I guess they're apps? I still have yet to find many useful apps. At least what i think will be useful ends up being only semi-usable or i end up not using it because it's not really helping me do anything.
So i really hate desktops with dozens of icons anyway, and that's all metro looks like to me, a big noisy useless bunch of icons that mostly clutter the desktop and get used infrequently. I use the desktop as a sorting space and shuffle things in and out as i'm installing or making things. All that ultimately ends up getting placed into a folder and tucked away so it's not always in my face begging me to click it.
If their goal is to make it look like my program files got puked onto the desktop, they succeeded.

well, i couldn't find the image i was looking for, but this will serve.
What i was looking for was a 30 year old version of the Atari computer system "gui" which was basically rows and columns of colored rectangles that you could tab between to launch programs stored on the disk. It wasn't graphical really, it was all old ascii stuff, but it looks a lot like microsoft just made a version of that but with pictures instead of text as if people have grown too stupid to read.
but i guess the almost 20 year old AOL for kids garbage looks even more like 8 than even the Atari 800 ui

I feel like their thought process was to make big icons and big spaces to make touch nav easy. I've got a Win8 touch device and I don't really dislike the Metro Start like I do on my desktop. It's pretty convenient especially on high dpi devices where you can barely even see regular icons, much less touch them easily. 3200x1800 on 13.3"? Those icons measure like 3mm across. I'm actually grateful for Metro here when I want to be all touchy.
The real area they fucked up was not giving any option for the vast vast majority of users still on non-touch desktops to keep something resembling the old menu.

yeah, i just don't understand why they need an all inclusive all encompassing all everything format,
and not just have Windows PC, Windows Tablet, and Windows Phone. Can't they make them seamlessly integrate without having to bloat tablets with useless PC processes and ruin PCs with a touch optimized UI?
i'm betting they could've made surface a tablet only OS and really streamlined the code for tablets instead of compromising every aspect of it to force a single OS for every platform. it's stupid.
And why can't it fucking detect that i don't have a fucking touchscreen TV and load the desktop instead of metro. It should at the very least be disableable like Aero.
but i guess they can't cram shit down our throat if they don't push shit on people they don't want.

oh yeah, and i do have a surface and i like it pretty well, it can be a bit buggy and unresponsive and it's hard to use things like excel on it, but metro does navigate well for tablets. i also have an ipad i got for christmas and i've been using that a lot for media, the screen is excellent, but the surface has kind of become my "third screen" and use it to pull up web info when i've got my other monitors occupied. But it has no real killer application for me. it's useful, kinda like any old screwdriver is useful. but nothing real special or groundbreaking, imo.

Because that would be smart. Instead, it would be much better to take a smartphone UI optimized for fingers on a 4" screen and use it on a 24" monitor with a keyboard and mouse.

Also your're wrong: AOL Kids™ didn't have live tiles. Also they weren't called "tiles" back then, but "really large buttons for kids". See, this changes everything.

i'd have preferred they put their money into optimizing the UI with voice recognition and clever voice navigation instead of gestures and touch. but both are equally useless when it comes to business software, but they really should've put their money into cortana and given up on "surface" when apple beat them to a touch based device.
