I don't think it does start getting worse necessarily; it's a great show throughout. Most people would say the "worst" season was season 3, with things picking up in season 4.
I personally enjoyed every season, although there were some episodes I felt were quite boring or pointless plot-wise. Don't look them up if you don't like spoilers, but I felt Exposé and Stranger in a Strange Land were both shit.

season 3 is where it went off the rails for me. seasons one and two felt like riding in a car with a driver who knew fresh and surprising directions you wouldn't expect to take, but then by season three it became apparent the driving was aimless and the destination unknown even to him. season 3 the driver denying he was lost, and in the constant seeking of a clear route out of the mire half of the story arcs were left abandoned never to be answered or revisited. i watched the whole thing, but by the end i was convinced the only people lost were the writers. Lots of cool ideas for mysteries, but, i guess, way to mysterious and complex to have points.
