"It's a sad day, young people, a sad day. Nelson Mandela has died. He was the epitome of courage, dignity and forgiveness. He could have launched a bloody race war in South Africa simply by raising his fist after his release from 27 years in prison. He didn't raise that fist. He was/is a hero. End of my preaching.

On to more mundane things - like the weather and your final exam. The weather outside (obviously, it wouldn't be inside) is supposed to be frightful Friday. I don't know if/when the university will cancel classes, but it will - if the forecast is accurate. If classes are still a go early in the morning, I will be on Metro's No. 24 in anticipation of seeing you at 11:15 a.m. That is, of course, I make it to the park-and-ride lot (notice the compound modifier; yes, a teaching moment.) If, indeed, we have class, I will administer the final exam. And, yes, I will expect you to be there. But -- and I want to emphasize the BUT -- I do not want you risking life and limb commuting to campus. If road conditions make it unsafe to drive to campus, do not venture out. If we have class and you are in the newsroom to take the final exam, good. If you are unable to make it to the newsroom, you get a pass. Taking the final exam can only help you; not taking it (because of the weather) will not affect your final grade. I have you covered. If I see you tomorrow, it will be a sheer delight. Truly it will. If I don't see you, well, it's been real. Truly it has. And in that case, Merry Christmas. If you are offended by Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings, tough.

I've enjoyed being your teacher. I've enjoyed having you in my newsroom. And despite any copy editing deficiencies you might have, I would welcome you in my newsroom. You would develop into damn fine copy editors quite quickly. Now, repeat after me: No noun antecedent/pronoun agreement errors; no noun antecedent/pronoun agreement errors; no noun antecedent/pronoun agreement errors. Feel better?

See you tomorrow -- maybe. And, yes, that's the correct use of the dash. Sigh."
