Fast food jobs are not there to provide a living for a family of four to live in a house, and afford some basic luxuries. These jobs are good for teens looking to have some pocket change, and for people with few living expenses (shared housing, people who move around a lot).

Their request of 15 an hour is quite ridiculous; they should be asking for 10 an hour, as that seems fair.

i think it would be better if they just raised minimum wage by 2-3% a year. we're talking about starting wages, not permanent life long salary. 15 an hour is 31,200 a year! 10 dollars an hour is 20,800! not bad for putting lettuce on a burger patty and differentiating yellow mustard from mayonnaise!
just keep minimum wage adjusted against inflation and maybe raise it .35 cents or so to help people immediately. that's it. federal minimum wage is 7.25 an hour, which is 15,080 yearly. with .35 cent raise that takes them to 15,808. a raise of 728 dollars a year starting. that's a big screen TV right there. maybe a discount walmart brand TV, but hey, it's 42 inches. and next year you'll get a 3% raise, that's 474.24 for a yearly income of 16,282!
for frying french fries and passing out ketchup packets! nice!

As soon as you start having wives and kids to take care of you'd better hold down that job long enough to start earning a few promotions and raises. Either that or learn a trade of some kind that uses more of your skills than just short term memory and spatial orientation skills.

but since common sense will not prevail, here's what happens. The work of taking orders and sending them to the kitchen will be farmed out to call centers in Bangalore. at the drive through you'll order as usual, however the person you're talking to is in india and being paid 2.35 an hour. In stores you're ordering from a push button touch screen i-pad type interface.Drink orders will be filled by purpose built robotic drink dispensers, and all foods from the fryer will be prepared by similar robotic technologies.
jobs will remain for humans, such as janitorial work and making "artisan" hamburgers, but you only need one or two people to run the whole thing.

also the mcdonalds around here already has a robotic drink dispenser. all the drive-through worker does is cap it and hand it off to me with a straw while the robot prepares the next drink.the future is now

$15/hour? I was all for OWS before the social justice shitheads took over, but asking for that much for unskilled work will do more harm than good. It isn't even about fairness any more, it's pure greed and the sort of unreasonable demands that killed the US manufacturing sector.

They put it high so they can negotiate it down. If they asked for $10 they would get less than that. If they ask for $15 then settle for $10, it would seem reasonable. Do you even barter?
