A 20-year-old University of Guelph student who was seriously injured in a fire at his residence room on Saturday night set the fire deliberately, officials at the university allege.

The student suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries as a result of the fire in his fourth floor residence room of the Dundas Hall residence and is now in stable condition at Guelph General Hospital.

Brenda Whiteside, the vice president of student affairs at the university, said two staff members were also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, but have been released.

"The fire was set by the injured student in his room, and the fire and damage were confined to that space," the university said in an online bulletin. It did not say how it concluded the student set the fire.

The fire was reported just before 8 p.m and was extinguished by the Guelph Fire Department.

Whiteside said the fourth floor will be blocked off at least until Monday, when police are expected to investigate the cause of the fire.

Thirty students have been given temporary accommodation.
