Topic: Why hasn't South Park did an episode about BitCoins?
Catherine !TGirlYJKXM started this discussion 13 years ago#32,620
Seems like it could easily be implemented into one of their stories. Hell, there is 2 more episodes in the Black Friday arc. They could probably be squeezed in there somewhere.

With the media hype it seems about right for a Bitcoins episode.

The way the price changes is shitty. It's unstable so useless as currency. For speculation, it needs to swing back and forth to be a good money maker. Instead it randomly jumps one direction majorly, then it stagnates FOR A YEAR, then repeat.
And plus to use it, you have to spend 3 months continuously downloading all the past blockchains to finally get even most of them. Every time someone gets on board, it's a 3 month wait to download the shit.

Sounds like it has perfect potential for an episode.

Stan and Kyle mine some bitcoins on the computer, and suddenly they're bazillionaires. Cartman, consumed with rage and jealousy, concocts a scheme with Butters to break into Stan's house and steal the Bitcoins, but by the time they succeed in doing so, the Government has shut down Silk Road and MtGox and Bitcoins are worthless. Then Butters makes a speech about how its wrong to steal, and Kyle makes the "I've learned something today" speech, then Cartman calls Kyle a fucking jew and the credits roll. Or something.

Solo mining hasn't been possible for 5 years. Group mining takes several months to get one bitcoin. If you buy expensive mining hardware, you will never pay the investment back.

It's a cartoon on TV: you can't expect it to be totally accurate. Or maybe Stan and Kyle were mining Bitcoins in 2009 as a joke and they left the program running all these years and they see a thing on the news about Bitcoins and they realize they're trillionaires.

Oh and South Park is known for exaggerations.
@455,044 (Meta)
Should Randy be involved somewhere? I'd imagine the moral of the story would be similar to the one in "Canada Strikes!" (referring to the Internet as a money making medium), but they do not seem to do that little speech anymore at the end.
I do hope they follow up on this Black Friday series of South Park.

Randy would see the kids were excited about Bitcoins and try to play along by mining them on his own computer, to the disappointment of Sharon who will try to explain to him that it's just fake money, and he'll never recoup the investment in CPU cycles or electricity anyway.

It's much more well-known and useful. Bitcoins were only cool when SilkRoad was running. Not cool to me, but some people.

It's on NPR and the rest of the mainstream media, it's no longer obscure or "underground" now.

I just hear people whine about it, but mostly the Autphag-types who believe they're in on some grand conspiracy.

I wasn't meaning that NPR is bad, just that I was listening to NPR last week and heard a segment about Bitcoin.

Matt and Trey would never do an episode on Bitcoins.
If they are at all interested in them, they are probably hoarding them themselves and do not want a bunch of 12 year olds asking mommy to buy them a Bitcoin, driving the price up; at least not until they have 250k BTC each.

Well, they're accepted by the government of Germany as private money, which means German taxes are payable in Bitcoin. So there's that, and Germany is just one step away from Hitler so the episode pretty much writes itself.

You are all crazy to be buying up Bitcoins now that mining pools control practically 50% of the mining. They are gaming you though collusion.
Newer coins have less of an issue with this.

Because Bitcoins are fucking stupid in the way Scientology is fucking stupid, which they also left alone for years before anonymous came along.
I'm sure once a major celebrity starts shitting on other celebrities for not using Bitcoin the way Tom Cruise shat all over Brooke Sheilds for taking antidepressants to cope with postpartum depression, then they'll finally be some benefit in making a Bitcoin episode.
Until that sort of thing happens, I wouldn't hold my breath.
