AFAIK you can choke yourself our but when you faint your hands will go limp.

What I've tried to do is wrap a rope or cloth around my neck and pull it tight for as long as I could, but I always woke up with a headache later

Yes, but highly unlikely. If you wish to commit suicide, it's much better to use rope or a belt or something and tie it.

Occasionally kids have died playing the aptly-named "choking game" but again, it's unlikely. You can also cause a stroke or brain damage. Unless your intent is to die, it's not a good idea to deprive the brain of oxygen.
