Topic: Bitcoins are at $575

Bitcoins !5qPJGR/JRI started this discussion 13 years ago #32,579

I've asked when it hit $0.50, $1, $20, $30, and $100, and $200, so I'll ask you again!

Why didn't you buy?

Also: I plan to ask when it hits $1k, and when economists declare it to be the de facto global reserve currency.

You would have by trading inferior currencies over the internet.

I hope next time you will think twice before turning down financial advice from strangers on the internet.

Because at the time it seemed silly. Bitcoins wasn't the first digital currency: the rest never really caught on.

Now is probably the worst time to buy, with all the hype and media attention.

Meta double-posted this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #454,572

@OP
Why didn't you buy gold in the '90s when it was under $300? Or Apple stock when it was $16?

> Bitcoins wasn't the first digital currency: the rest never really caught on.
It was the first distributed digital general currency.

It's ridiculous to believe that "Facebook credits" or "WoW gold" or any of the rest would become a universal digital currency, they were at the whim of a single entity, could be taken down, weren't general purpose, and so on.

The way people value assets among the general public is idiotic, and based on what they think some magical market fairy will bless or curse next. A small internet startup that has no monopoly on an easily reproducible product? Value in the billions! This happened with Groupon, and people said it couldn't just be recreated because of "brand recognition", and yet they turned down their buyout offer and are valued at a fraction of what they were, because plenty of competitors popped up. Brand recognition will not let those companies coast while they find a way to monetize and then pull in billions. What next? Instagram is valued at billions, and turns down facebook despite not having a model that will ever let it pull in close to what was offered for it. Next everyone will be shocked when Facebook just makes "self-detructing images" an option in the messenger platform they already have.

Bitcoin had an inherent utility that meant there was no competition in the market for it, and that was evident even when it was valued low.

@previous (Meta)
I was a child when both of those were happening.

I had 1 BTC and I gave it to the JIDF, because I thought it was funny. I don't remember how much it was worth back then, but it wasn't much.

I have 0.10995 atm.

richard branson is accepting bitcoins as payment for rides in his rocketship.
that's pretty neat.

the trouble with bitcoins hitting 1k though is if it drops back down to $30 people who accepted 15 bitcoins for a car or some shit are going to be pretty pissed next week.
