I think it'd be better. Religion has proven to be quite divisive, it's just another thing pointlessly separating people. So people would probably get along somewhat better without it.

Actually, historically, religion has been more uniting than divisive. Tribes, countries, civilizations, empires, and continents have been bound together by religion. The trouble is that unifying has rarely been a peaceful process, since it requires people to agree on something. While religion has proven more effective in generating coherent communities than most ideas, it remains a fact that many individuals will rather start a fight than agree with anyone, and civilizations/countries are even more stubborn and WILL start wars rather than agreeing with others.
The fact that all civilizations have originated and been bound together by religion rather than anything else, pretty much proves that religion has had a uniting effect, and the divisiveness comes from human nature itself. I hate to turn you into a cynic, but the sad truth is that we're born assholes, all of us, atheists and religious alike.

Anyway, the uniting effect of religion is quite limited to people of the same religion. If you don't join up or are of a different religion, you are an outsider.
