Because it's the gun the media and politicians flip out over, it will become the weapon of choice for shooters who want to make a splash.
Again, there's nothing amazing or unique about the AR15 that makes it suitable for use in a murder: it's expensive, bulky, and hard to conceal. Yes it can hold 30 rounds with a high capacity magazine, but so can many other guns. You can get a Glock with a 20 round magazine and conceal and maneuver that much easier. It's much cheaper, too.
It can be used at a longer range than a pistol but none of these mass shootings seemed to have involved long range shooting.
Does anyone remember what weapons the Columbine killers used? Or what weapon Nidal Malik Hasan used when he shot up Fort Hood? But everyone knows Adam Lanza and Jared Lee Loughner used AR15s, because the media has repeated that fact ad nauseum. Because the media wants to scare you because people watch more news when they're scared (more ad $$$).

I don't know how much affect media coverage actually has on these things. I haven't looked in to it enough to be fair. I'd say mass shootings have increased due to media coverage, but public shootings are a weekly if not daily occurance in pretty much every major city. I never hear about a third of the shit that goes down in my city on the local news.
