I downloaded the Stella 2600 emulator, and a ROM package of all the games released for the 2600, and it just sucks.
None of the games make any fucking sense, and the graphics look like some kind of nightmare Lego avalanche, and the sound consists entirely of "blip bloop bleep" shit.
I know the system was developed 46 years ago and the technology they had back then was very limited, but still. I don't get the appeal.

Part of the beauty of Atari is you have to use your imagination. It's not like the video games of today which rely solely on audio-visual stimulation. I recommend playing while high or drunk.

I did, and to be fair Pitfall is not that bad. But like, 99% of the other games just make absolutely no sense. @452,906 (B)
It is quite minimal indeed. To me, it's not realistic enough to work, though. Maybe I'm spoiled by being a '90s kid and the SNES was like a PS4 running on a 4K TV compared to the 2600.
I definitely understand the appeal of older games: DOOM, Tomb Raider, Super Mario Brothers, Mariokart, etc are all still as fun as they were back then. I guess maybe you had to have grown up with the Atari to enjoy it? I'm sure it was a revelation compared to Pong.

Do they make Atari emulators for tablets?

Google play has one which costs $2.99. I don't know about iOS but they probably have one too.

Back then you had to use your imagination. It's very primitive but that was state of the art back in the day. When people think "classic" they usually think of NES, which makes the 2600 pretty underrated compared to what came after it.

There's some video game documentaries that go into why the games sucked so much, you might watch a few of them. IIRC there were just no standards to go by, most games were made by one developer in just a few days and the whole industry was one giant clusterfuck of tiny companies releasing pure unadulterated shit. Some developers were trying to figure out what worked and was actually fun, some developers didn't give a shit and just wanted sales based on the 'idea' of a game and the cover picture. The few games that were good when the dust settled set the standard for every game made thereafter. My first gaming system was an Atari, I remember liking pitfall. Nintendo is what really changed everything, quite a few Nintendo games still hold up well today.
