Topic: What smartphone should I get?

Anonymous A started this discussion 13 years ago #32,409

I have AT&T. Before you give me hate, I have a plan which I've had with them since forever ago, and it allows me to dodge some bullets and cheat the system.

Anyways, I want a good smartphone and would like to get some firsthand opinions/experiences.

I'm not too interested in the iPhone 5c/s but I'm not 100% against it either.

Do you really need a smartphone?

Irrelevant; I have the money and I'm American.

Unless your old AT&T plan is REALLY cheap, you should look at T-Mobile's prepaid offering: 100 minutes and unlimited text and data for $40 a month on 4G.

I actually am looking around at other provider plans as well. Thanks for the recommendation.

As for phones, Nexus 4 is what I would recommend.

Why not the nexus 5?

LG G2 or Nexus 5.

I might as well ask this here. I've been considering on purchasing my first smartphone (and cellphone period), but have no idea what some of the good models are or some of the good service plans are. Can I have some advice for a first time buyer?

From what little I've researched it seems like the basic packages are the way to go as they allow for unlimited talk, text, and web, but I also found out that pay-as-you-go may also be better than an actual plan.

What do you all suggest?

I have a Google Nexus 7 (first generation) tablet so I do know I want to stick with Android and Google. Is their Nexus 5 smartphone a decent phone?

Depends if you like pure android. Top line phones ATM include HTC one and sgs4 (which I have).

I assume pure android means directly from Google themselves?

N5 matches their specs at only $350, so it's pretty top line as well.

Phone companies like to alter android for their phones for example touchwiz by samsung, pure android is android as released by google.

N5 has ugly backplate and no micro SD. No thanks.

How much do phone companies alter the OS? I think I might have found a phone to get since I kind of like pure Android on my Nexus 7. What services cover the phone?

It doesnt matter because you can root the phone and run whatever ROM you want.

Anonymous K replied with this 13 years ago, 5 minutes later, 2 weeks after the original post[^] [v] #454,598

@previous (L)
You can't actually run whatever ROM you want. I can't run some random ROM on any random device I happen to buy.

Cathy, if you you want to run "some random ROM" then please take a look at which devices "some random ROM" supports first.

Taste and sophistication are useless attributes? Thanks for the opinion, virgin.

You are all wrong. The correct phone for the moment is an UNLOCKED HTC One running cyanogenmod.

And N5 is a bad purchase, because there are still many people sore at the Google play store after the shitty Nexus 4 launch. When they see what phone you have, they'll think you are a fanboy or a fool for putting up with a what they'd imagine was a shitty online purchasing experience.
