Or can there be truth without evidence?

Yes, moral beliefs are opinions. Still we believe our own morality to be the truth, we cannot show in any way why it is the truth yet still we believe it to be the truth. Very unscientific.

So you do not think its the truth that people should not hunt children and kill them? Why?

If you can't explain things then why even post the link. Doesn't make you look any better.

pff. Many threads happen more then 1 time. You are just butthurt because you can't deal with what it is saying yet you cannot argue against it.

you can't provide evidence for that claim but you can refer to the categorical imperative or whatever it is that prevents you from stealing
stupid

i answered in that thread, but since i cant find it anymore i'll do it again. it's not a fact that stealing is bad, it's an opinion that most people agree with.

Anonymous E replied with this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #450,829

@450,824 (F)

what exactly do you mean by refer to the categorical imperative or whatever? Like use it in a example to explain why people should not steal.

Anonymous E double-posted this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #450,830

@450,828 (dreamworks)

And would you say that the opinion is true?

dreamworks replied with this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,831

@previous (E)
an opinion per definition cannot be true or false

@previous (dreamworks)

I have never heard that being said about opinions ever before.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/opinion

nope nothing about it being not true or false. Seems like you are making up bullshit however if you do actually amazingly believe that, would you say that its not false when someone would have the opinion that people who are homosexuals should be executed?

Anonymous E replied with this 13 years ago, 5 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,836

@450,833 (F)

ahh i see. Well yes you can do that. So whatever you want or do not want determines what is good or bad. I know this. Does not determine what the truth is, or well i would have thought that most people would want evidence but
i guess truth exists without evidence. Also you are very strange. Why on earth would i quote your entire post.

dreamworks replied with this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,837

@450,832 (E)
for something to be true it requires substantial proof which an opinion cannot have, if it does its no longer an opinion. how do you not understand these words?

So even opinions like the existence of God, is not something that can be true or false?

Anonymous E double-posted this 13 years ago, 36 seconds later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,841

@450,838 (dreamworks)

The majority of people believe their own opinions are true.

dreamworks replied with this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,843

thats not an opinion that is an untested/false claim

@previous (E)
only stupid people that dont know the meaning of the word

Anonymous E replied with this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,844

@previous (dreamworks)

not its the definition of an opinion.

1. A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof

It seems to me you are just choosing when or when not to use evidence to tell you what the truth is for convenience.

Anonymous G joined in and replied with this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,846

@previous (E)
People think their opinions are facts, or the (or a) logical conclusion from facts, not that their opinions themselves are true. Opinions can be neither true nor false. Thanks.

why the hell would you stop at 'whatever'?
it's not merely what you want it's what people want
under that precept there is a universal law
you can call what you want 'true' but you are creating your own values
nothing is 'just good'
why would you try to prove something like this
i don't know why you are trying to find truth or evidence in ethics

That is a lie about people, the part where you say they think their opinions are not true. The vast majority of any normal group, christians, atheists, north koreans etc.. would say that its true that people should
not go and kill little babies for fun.

> not its the definition of an opinion.

Untested claim: Vague, ambiguous, or incomplete claim OR factual claim for which evidence is yet unavailable.
The latter definition fits much better, all though there is some argument there. I'm not sure what your point is though.
> It seems to me you are just choosing when or when not to use evidence to tell you what the truth is for convenience.
I'm not.

Anonymous E replied with this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,864

@previous (dreamworks)

So when you claim something about the real world, its a factual claim?

dreamworks replied with this 13 years ago, 5 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,868

@previous (E)
Fact: Statement about the real worldsupported by convergent evidence. Facts can be empirical, analytical, evaluative, or metaphysical.

Anonymous E replied with this 13 years ago, 4 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,871

@previous (dreamworks)

which part of people should not steal is not about the real world? You think i am talking about beings in the mystical land of Narnia?

Anonymous E double-posted this 13 years ago, 1 minute later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,872

@450,868 (dreamworks)

Well when for example i would claim God exists i am then not making a factual claim, Its not a statement supported by evidence.

and thus an untested claim

Anonymous E replied with this 13 years ago, 2 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #450,879

@previous (dreamworks)

You are going to have to do better. You must understand that since you have made it clear about how you seem to have your own definitions of things. How is claiming that God exists, automatically supported by convergent evidence.
