Installed it on my workstation. Works fine now, I like the fact that you can snap metro apps alongside the desktop.

Keep on waiting. You searched, searched, and searched. Finally, you found an idiot ranting because he couldn't use his computer whilst it was downloading for 40 something minutes. It varies on how long you aren't going to be able to use your PC, depending on what PC you have. It took no longer than 20 minutes on nice HP, and that was after everything was done installing.

I have server 2008 on another machine for sharepoint app development, and it's sad how much I'm used to the tiles and corners in windows 8. The old start button on Server 2008 feels just like that, old tech.

you reveal yourself as really clueless about OSX/unices and computers in general
under the hood OSX is pretty much *BSD with their own GUI instead of Xorg + some window manager
the rest is just like a *BSD, you can even use the *BSD ports and compile whatever you want and run it in OSX

The default "it just works" mentality, hiding all the bits that make UNIX, well, UNIX is what would keep me away from OSX if I wanted a UNIX based OS. Hides most of the Unix-y filesystem from the user, weird shit like has a compiler but it's not installed out of the box, every application is sandboxed (might cripple some applications you port over) etc.

But sure, it's candy as fuck and I'm sure you're enjoying pushing your magic mouse around the fancy desktop environment.

It seems to upgrade from 8 to 8.1 you need to go through the windows store, instead of it coming through windows update. Ok, that's retarded but moving on since it seems the store at least does not require an M$ account... So, lets go open the metro interface, start the full screen store app, and it has now been downloading for the past few hours. I think. Naturally I didn't want to stare at the full screen store application the entire time so I tabbed out of it, and it's nowhere to be found. Not on the task bar where the windows updater would sit showing its progress (which was a great feature added to 7)... Ok, back to the metro interface. Is it done yet? Nope, not yet. Guess I'll tab back out and check again in an hour, instead of being able to keep an eye on it in the task bar. Thanks microsoft.

you really think every application in osx is running in a sandbox? lol, only app store shit has to be sandboxed
any sane OS hides certain (system) files from a normal user, even with your self compiled LFS you need to toggle it or add command line options to see hidden stuff
you can enable hidden filesi n the finder, just like you can in windows or file managers in linux or open up a terminal
what compiler are you talking about that is build in? there is none, when running command that would require gcc/cc an xcode popup will ask you if you wish to install it
your assumptions show you haven't got a clue

xcode is included in OSX it's just not installed (see how silly that is?).
Also, what makes OSX, OSX? It's the user experience the GUI gives one. And the GUI does all it can to hide the fact UNIX is underneath.
Compare for example ls / with opening the main drive in the GUI.

Don't even start talking about the UFS support on OSX etc.

I'm really happy you're satisfied with your UNIX based OS and all mate, but if I wanted a UNIX based OS I'd rather have FreeBSD then OSX any time of the day.

i much rather use a slick polished GUI on top of a barebones BSD (darwin) over some age old bloat like Xorg with one the 9001 unfinished and buggy window managers on top of that
please tell me what exactly a GUI should do if not hide underlaying crap of the OS, also tell me how/what the GUI exactly is "hiding"

It's alright. Not nearly as different as anyone who hates Metro would have wanted it to be, but I never did. I like the new app tiling but it's really very similar otherwise. For a whole year of work it's really not much to show.

Fucked up my ramdisk for a bit but it's all the same now.

After seeing some Apple pro apps are sandboxed I thought everything is bananas on OSX, my fault.

There is a reason I'm tied to Visual Studio atm. it's FOTM and brings in the most cash for me. Who knows where I'll end up in a year from now, but atm. I need VS to make money. Unlike some ITT, I'm not a fanboy sticking to a brand like Flanders to his bible.

I have a really big screen and don't desire a full screen metro thing, my windows 7 has a list of programs in small mode pinned to the start menu and I can start a new one unobtrusively whenever I like
