'The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.'
Oh, wait, that was Senator Obama...
Clinton as a reminder balanced the budget and left a surplus.

How long will the government shutdown last?

@previous (E)
I no the exact answer to that. The moment the Republican party sees the shutdown leading to total loss of next congressional election...They END IT that fast.

Clinton was by far the most conservative president in the post-FDR era. No major wars, welfare reform (with many thousands removed from the dole), balanced the budget with a surplus, paid down a bit of the national debt, free trade agreements were signed, government spending as a percentage of GDP fell, and as a result the economy boomed and times were good. Clinton even did what Republicans say they want and enacted DOMA (something I feel was very, very wrong).
Bush II, on the other hand made a clusterfuck of everything, and then Obama tried to put out the flames by pissing all over it.

How did FDR's New Deal go down? The premier of BC enacted a "Little New Deal" to deal with the Depression, and it seemed to be pretty effective.

@previous (K) > thinks trillions in debt is a big deal > 2013
interestingly enough total US debt is 40 trillion, GDP is 15 trillion, and assets stand at 118 trillion.
if you put this in terms of a "home owner" that would be like someone who has a 200,000 dollar mortgage, makes about 65,000 dollars a year net, and has 600,000 dollars worth of assets (cash, land, stocks, bonds, what have you.)
so tell me how that's "dangerous." especially when most of that debt is owed to ourselves and if the Feds can't pay they just print more money and everyone is happy. this budget fight, it's all smoke and mirrors, i'm just sick of politicians flapping the curtains.
and raising the debt ceiling is like the same guy raising his 15 thousand dollar credit limit to 16 thousand dollars. but they'll make it out like the end of times.

Actually that is basically correct.
This is a lot like just what is the value of a particular woman? Is she is great in bed n can cook n clean and earn money ...She has great value EXCEPT Muslims do not accept such.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As long as USA looks good as a long term investment all will be cool. Currently no other country feels great about investing (for income) in their own back yards so USA wins.
