What? As the proud owner of a $250 chromebook, they're great. It weighs nothing, it boots up in like 8 seconds but that doesn't matter because you put it to sleep whenever which makes it consume pretty much no power and it wakes up instantly. I've gone several days without charging it and using it quite a lot. It just being a web browser may be a bit limiting so I installed crouton which provides a fully functioning ubuntu in a chroot which you can toggle to with a keystroke, then back to chromeos as they run side-by-side. Personally I like it far better than any tablet I've ever touched.

It being just a browser is what's making me cringe, not even installing crouton helps. My $50 tablet weights nothing, survives 2 days of college use, gives me access to the play store (muuuuh fart apps) and al the other goodies that come with having android compared to a browser.
Boots just as fast and I also just put it to sleep instead powering it of.

I don't really know of any apps which do not exist on the web as a webapp or have a counterpart in the chromestore. Besides, it has a keyboard and a reasonably sized screen. You should also take a look at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/apps and https://www.google.com/ to discover how much more "apps" a chrome browser/linux computer can run than an android tablet.

I'm stating my personal opinion, if I can't run VisualStudio on it I might as well use a $50 chinkpad for what I'd use the chromebook for. Even the little web dev. freelancing I do is impossible without Paint.NET (inb4 GIMP, no, just no)
So this is my opinion, my use cases.

i need usb3 cuz you could run linux from usb3 on a big disk
the samsung chrome book has usb3 and its able to boot from it i think
no idea if you can get the full 5gb/s bandwidth but it still beats usb2

once you really need to type you will curse the on screen keyboard, sure you can get a dock
the beauty of a chrome book is that you get a nice little machine with a wicked battery life
that you can hook up to your tv to watch full hd --porn-- art house films
you're only stuck in the browser if you're a complete noob not knowing how to chroot or run a full linux distro on it
also you are not really stuck in a browser in chrome os, they changed that to a desktop idea with file browser and media player a long time ago
the only thing i didn't like with the samsung chrome book is/was the lack of proper hw accelerated video in anything but chrome os

Wouldn't it be nicer to install the linux on the internal ssd and hook up a big disk for storage? You can dualboot I think. There is ChrUbuntu which is ubuntu aimed towards chromebooks.

If we're already hacking shit together and compiling stuff for ARM, might as well get a cheap Windows 8 RT device, jailbroken it can run applications in desktop mode if you recompile the for ARM (read, all the FOSS projects are running nicely on it already, even Half Life is playable, lol) and there is an emulation project going strong, somethin like Wine, a middle layer to run x86 software on the RT version.
All in all, again. My use case, my opinion. There is no reason for me to get a chromebook.
