Nokia had already dumped its own O/S development and took on MS. With Apple n Android running the O/S market for portable phone/tablets etc and large volume desktops going away except for business users - MS needed hardware, so for $7 or so billion wot did MS have to lose? They pick up a few valuable patents.
Inside info says Nokia was dumping MS for Android anyway.
Rumor only but given Ballmer is leaving soon, its just possible the CEO from Nokia now running Nokia/MS might end up running all of MS.
My money is on anyone but MS ending up with the portable market in the long run.

I don't think so. I think Microsoft bought Nokia because Nokia's the only major phone maker pushing Windows Phone and with them making a loss of 3 billion Euro last year, they were sinking fast. If Nokia went under, they would have to either make their own phones (under the Surface brand?) or convince Samsung or HTC or someone to embrace an irrelevant niche OS. Kind of sad because Nokia hardware is still good, and Nokia used to be the best, most popular phone brand.

Nokia couldn't have dumped WP for a few more years since the contract they signed, Elop saved Nokia but everyone is giving him shit for selling out to MS.
It was a fast sinking ship before Elop came and saved the day. There were Lumia devices running Android, but once the deal was signed they went full MS path.
I could see Elop taking the CEO position in MS after Ballmer, and I sure see MS staying the the game for quite some time.
Now that the "no apps" situation is sorting out, and with the sub $150 Lumias selling like hot cake, MS is gaining marketshare rather quick these days. So IMO, MS with Nokias hardware division is here to stay.

actually they bought nokia because microsoft makes $10 for every smart phone sold with windows software,
but makes $40 for every nokia smartphone it sells. there is more money to be had on the hardware side than the software side, so they bought a hardware manufacturer.
