State the reasons.

Mine: It can competently host a low traffic site.

I already own one and I don't really use it. I already have a tiny low-power EEE pc for server tasks so the rpi is nice for its portability but still idk.

I've kinda wanted to get one, it looks like a neat toy but I have no idea what to use it for.

You mean you guys haven't played with it yet? It's the best thing for learning new shit, at least from a system admin side. Make a VPN server, a website, a fileserver, whatever.

If you don't have anything "server"-like already it could be neat to hook it up to a big hard drive and use it for torrents/media streaming/xbmc on tv or something like that.

http://minichan.org/search?search_for=topics&topic_headline=Raspberry+Pi&message_body=&author_name=&profile=&IP_address=&date_after=&date_before=&sort_by=age. As for sysadmin stuff I have VMs for that and VPSes for the websites.

Yeah, VMs are best for learning.

@OP
I'm working on initial steps of home automation and remote sensing stuff.

For the right kind of people it's a great toy. What more do you need to love it?

They are good for running Bitcoin miners on and that is what I would probably do with one.
