You got me to look that up. Gov support for housing is called Section 8 and in theory a single person could get a place where Gov pays. BUT and this is the bottom line. Family's come first and the current wait tyme is 3-5 years. So bottom line is Green with a GREEN CARD maybe could but only if he co-habitats with a guy or girl and then he wood have a long wait.
Money for food etc with Gov assistance is tightly regulated. One cannot go and buy booze on that program but one can buy milk and quality juices.

Yes, but like syntax said there is a long waiting list with women and children always getting priority (understandably). In America a guy like Green is almost certainly dead, in jail, or rotting in a gutter somewhere. Hence me saying how good he has it.

Ah, then yeah he'd probably be fucked. We prioritise people for housing too, but people facing homelessness are given priority (though obviously lower than that afforded to families and the elderly).

I guess the equivalent to Green's benefits in America would be SSDI (Social Security disability insurance) which is ~$600/month, not really enough to live on without family support. Green might in theory be able to get government housing (section 8) but as Ks said, he'd be at the very very back of a years-long line. He'd have to either get a job or probably be homeless.
Of course this varies from state to state, each American state is like it's own mini-country and they all have different laws and taxes and benefits. Green would probably live pretty well in California or New York, but he'd be on the street in Texas or Kansas.

Mental illness, when severe enough, is considered a disability. I have a brother in law who collects SSDI for depression. Though in his case, I don't think it's a disability. Or at least it wasn't until the antidepressants and antipsychotics and anxiety meds and ECT turned him into a near-vegetable.
