I also found the forced romantic sub-plot to be annoying too. It was kind of cute in the first half, but probably should have ended around the sixth episode.
Book 2 shows some promise, but feels like the writers hit a reset button on character development.

I really enjoyed ATLA. ATLA was really well done. I've watched the first few episodes of TLOK, but it didn't ever feel the same. I should probably start watching it more.

TLOK is still an alright series, but do not expect it to ever hold the same feel as the original series. The whole issues I have with it is the ending feeling rushed which is probably due to it originally being intended as a mini-series only. I guess everything works if that was all it was going to be, but the existence of a second season makes it feel like wasted potential.

At least this flashback managed to kindle some of the original charm of the original.
