Chewie and all other characters would have the same fucking sardonic dialogue because he can't help himself. Ridiculous moments of "girl power" for any female character because he still thinks he's in college trying to impress women's studies majors. Slightly better cinematography and no lens flare. DVD easter egg where he sucks off Han Solo.

Inara is both brilliant and (according to Serenity) fairly badass. Meanwhile all non-villain males besides Book come off as fools in some way. I really like the show, it just seems like the pandering of a shunned nerd rather than a reach for true equality.

Wash=plays with dinosaurs and generally acts like he's 12.
Mal=long history of terrible ideas (and socially inept with Inara.)

The crazy is the problem for River. Through most of the episodes of Firefly she is hurting or endangering the crew or having wild breakdowns. That's not bad-assery or super genius. It's not really until Serenity that River attains Buffy-like girl-power kick-assitude. Then it is pretty over the top. Kaylee is often portrayed as naive, and her ham-fisted attempts at wooing Simon do come off as socially inept. Inara pretty much just does her job, and Zoe pretty much just sticks to doing her job except that hers involves more guns and bad-assery.
As for handicapping, all the characters had moments in Firefly where they came off as brilliant or noble and helped save the day. All the the characters have strengths, weaknesses, issues, and awkward moments. Maybe if we were just looking at Serenity alone, then I might be more inclined to agree with you.

I appreciate that. I never refuted crazy because that has nothing to do with my point: I'm talking about the patronizing form of feminism -the vanity really- of the writer over his body of work. But FYI, River had at least two obvious Firefly instances of badassery: Uncanny shooting in War Stories and pretty much the whole of Objects in Space. The rest is too vague & subjective to refute.

Her crack shooting in War Stories came off more crazy than bad ass as the story leaves it up in the air as to whether she even knew what she was doing. The fact that it spooks Kaylee (who is busy not being particularly brilliant or bad ass in that episode) really makes it more of a scary, rather than heroic, moment. Objects in Space was really her one 'save the day' moment in Firefly.

No, basically I'm saying you are over-estimating the goofiness of the men and ignoring the foibles of the females. Each character has their moments, but they all have weaknesses and human qualities. If that's pandering to women's studies majors, then I think you are criticizing this unjustly. Again though, your criticism of Joss Whedon does have some merit. Buffy was over the top in that regard, and Serenity came pretty close.
