Some guy on the silk road is selling cocaine for around $4,000 a kilo, that's USD, I made the conversion from BTC to USD for your convenience. Also, since banks started investing in BTC their value has skyrocketed, so small amounts of stuff sell for bullshit prices like 0.00047 BTC, but that's another topic.
Anyway, a kilo of cocaine is by most people's accounts a fairly significant amount of cocaine, and the price seems to me to be reasonable considering the current market value of the product, and the relative ease of purchase Silk Road provides over say going to the local guy who sells coke in the kilograms. Drug dealers, and scientists: The only people in America smart enough to realize the value of the metric system.
So, I'll ask you this: If you were going to buy a kilogram of cocaine would you do it via silk road and take on the risks associated with that, or just purchase it from whatever guy you know locally, and take on the risks associated with that? Keep in mind that you probably will save a bit of money with the local guy.

Few people actually have direct access to anyone who could sell them a kilo of coke. 4k seems too good to be true, running price is more like 15k on a good day.

as i understand as long as you stay inside the tor network and don't access public web you don't have a chance of anything being trace-able back to you. unless you are talking about whether sr ads are legit and not just cops in which case idk

If you mean the JS exploit, it was only inserted into sites using Freedom Hosting. SR uses their own servers.
