It's a proxy war between the Saudis and Iran mainly. It also affects Israel, the US and Russia (and to a much lesser extent China). The Syrian people are mostly being used as pawns in the game of international politics. Everyone has competing interests but no one can afford to tip their hand too much so it's mostly on a slow burn, or it was until Assad gassed 3,000 people. He had been gassing them before but in smaller quantities and to lesser extent. I'm at work so I can't really go into detail but we are interfering there because it's in our national interest to do so, not because of oil or AIPAC or our love for al Qaeda or whatever.

Because politicians think we're children. So why doesn't America pour the billions we usually piss away on unnecessary military assets and actions in to developing a team of superhumans? I mean it's a proxy war from the international perspective. From the inside it was originally about citizens revolting against an oppressive leader & state security apparatus (the tortured children from I think Deraa?) inspired by the Arab spring revolts in Egypt and Libya and Tunisia. Now that the FSA and government forces are comprised of so many conflicting groups funded by outside parties, including Iranian funded hizbollah and Saudi funded radical rebels (which probably include al-qaeda esque groups) it's become much more of a regional proxy struggle with international elements since Russia won't authorize any UN Security council action because it backs Syria because Syria is a large purchaser of Russian arms and it has a strategically useful warm water military port. Oh also as a big but diplomatic "Fuck you" to the US of course.

Well we don't want to. Ideally (in my mind) we should have intervened in the beginning when Assad was indiscriminately bombing civilian centers. Obama is kind of a pussy and Bush sated our appetite for war so he had no popular support to fall back on. Instead of going to war Obama said "we won't interfere directly as long as you don't use chemical weapons.". That's where he drew the "red line". That was all fine and good, until Assad or one of his generals was actually dumb enough to use it on a heavily populated rebel-controlled city, which was in effect calling Obama's bluff. Now, either Obama intervenes, which pisses off a lot of the US, or we lose our standing in the world as a country that means what it says. Also if we don't intervene (and thanks to Russia there will be 0 UN intervention) Assad will just keep using sarin gas on civillians because it's much more effective than going door-to-door with troops. Also on a somewhat more minor note, it sets had precedent for future chemical/biological/nuclear weapons use by oppressive states. If other autocratic leaders think they can use those tools with impunity, they will, and when other nations complain, they will simply point to Syria and say "if they can do it, why can't we?"
