In what sense of creepy or depressing? I'm pretty sure the majority of the movies/OVAs listed as similar to the Ghibli films would be safe for watching with a ten year old. (Summer Wars and all of it's high tech stuff may be a bit too mind-fucking for ten and under in my opinion.)
Mahou Sensei Negima (Negima?) is slightly sexually perverted creepy in the way Negi has to make magic contracts. Asobi Ni Iku Yo might be sci-fi creepy but for sure the boobs are there. Kampfer has gender-bending, Nyan Koi has large breast moments, Kanon may be too girly, cute or fluffy for some... Ask me if you want to know more. I try to be careful when recommending anime because I know picky people as well as those who might be easily offended.
And by the way, I'm actually very interested in WataMote now.

None of the recommendations were horror if that's what you mean. I thought you would be okay with genderbending with how Ranma 1/2 has a lot of it, I am more accustomed to typing for a large crowd. But keep in mind some say Madoka is like a more adult version of the magical girl genre...
