Actually, rock collecting was inspired by stamp collecting. Cavemen realised that they could use the stamps to mail each other rocks, making it much easier to get ahold of rocks not yet in your collection. This wasn't possible with stamp collecting, as putting a stamp on a stamp and mailing it off is just silly.

Pokemon collecting was at this point forgotten, due to the Cavemen suddenly realising that they had not yet discovered electricity, causing their gameboys to die.
