From what I can gather, AOL was the beginning of the end. Before AOL, the internet was mainly populated by intelligent, university-educated adults because the internet was mainly only available in academia. After AOL, anybody with a pulse could get online (TRY AOL 9001 HOURS FREE!!!1!) and that ruined it.
Fun fact: I got my parents' AOL suspended a few times for using profanity in the chat rooms (calling someone a fag was a big deal in 1997).
