1. Would the OS X iWork suite be good enough or should I get Office for Mac?

2. What do I need in my dorm?

xx

What is an academic advisor for? My school apparently has some distinction between Academic counselor and academic advisor, but I'm not 100% on it AND they're also throwing around "faculty advisor" as something you get when you've fulfilled pre-major requirements. but I think I already have one? and do minors have separate advisors??

An academic advisor is usually a faculty member within your field or major who is supposed to suggest a course of study (within that field) based on where your interests lie within the field. I would imagine an academic advisor would have a broader role, talking to you about which majors might be suited to you or how best to study and balance your time.

Alright. How "together" are you supposed to be when you talk with your advisor? Because even though I have semi-vague ideas on what I want to do, I don't have anything concrete and I don't think I know enough yet to make concrete plans. Surely when walking in to their office for the first time they won't expect me to know what I'm doing? Because if I'm looking at things right, my advisor has basically done everything I wish I could ever do and I feel like an idiot just looking at their accomplishments and not understanding half of them.

Yeah, not having a solid idea of what you want to do is pretty common. Lots of people change majors or discover new paths they want to follow. It's a precious few who come in absolutely knowing what they want to do in the future. Just be frank about it; tell them what you think you might like to do, tell them why it interests you, and ask them what kind of study that might require on your part. Or just tell them that $X sounds really great but you aren't sure. It's their job to give you suggestions.

That said, they probably won't have a whole fuckton of time (depending on the institution) to devote to you. They are generally there to make sure you don't have any false impressions about a particular field, to give you advice about what courses to take once you have decided on a direction, and to make sure you aren't doing something monumentally stupid with your schedule. They are generally more valuable once have decided on something you want to do with your studies. In the beginning, don't be afraid to just tell them that you don't know what you might end up doing, give them an idea of what else interests you and where you might go in the future, and ask their advice about how to best hedge your bets while fulfilling course requirements.

tl;dr: Meh, just be honest and don't sweat it.

The fuckton is a unit of measure equaling 0.90718474 metric fucktons. It is often used informally to refer to a fucking large amount, number, or extent.

Fantastic. The juxtaposition between "atheist intellectual" and "rugged farmer" really makes a distinct character.

Some are annoying as shit, some are tolerable, some are never around, some barely ever leave, some are great and will help you out, some are thieving druggies - it's really a crapshoot.

How do I handle a shitty one? And what can be done if they're thieves or allow thieves into the room?

And what if our neighbours are cunts who play ska at all hours of the night?

Also, how does one find time to do laundry and shit when classes and other shit is constantly going on?

Are you fucking stupid. No one wants your weeaboo shit.

Ignore it.

College will be the least busy time of your whole life, unless you become an Internet layabout or something.

Not a weaboo, you must be thinking of Green or another such undesirable.

I'm fairly filled up on a couple of days, and throwing extracurriculars in would cut down on time significantly.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Fuck, the Stallman bot never fails.

If only the HURD were as reliable perhaps this copypasta would be irrelevant.
