Think about groceries, haircuts, clothes, and all of that sort of stuff like soap and paper products. Then add your phone bill/cable or whatever bills you'd have. Consider the cost of insurance and minor doctors visits. Think dentist. Think about new purchases you'll need, so, have a little savings.
Then add the car. The cars insurance, gas, and maintenance.
Just start adding all that up over a 12 month period and you find what your "minimim" standard of living is.

You can make ~$505/wk. in the summer and ~$145/wk. in the school year. That's just under $10k total for the whole year. You can maybe cover tuition with your income, and that's assuming you're lucky in getting work.
I'm not figuring in days off, or any income tax or other deductions. If you can get a job as an RA in the dorms three of the years, though, you could probably get away with not that much in loans? Assuming they have RA positions in Canada that cover the cost of the dorm room, and you're willing to put up with the headache.
Bartending would obviously be better than minimum wage, but I doubt you can get away without some student loans.

We did ride through some places that were pretty rough, but, its like boys town in Matamoras without the whores. The whores had nicer places to go I think becuase everyone there was either old or a child. Young adults had moved away for a large part.
Of course the architecture was different and the food was different.

No oil sands in Vancouver, and a relatively quite high cost of living. Moreover, there aren't any good engineering schools there that I know of, and the drinking age in BC is 19.

Alberta isn't bad. Northern Alberta, afaik, is just very small-towny in general. Not as bad as most due to the skilled labour that has to be kept on, I'd imagine.
