http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boletus_calopus is, in fact, not the one I ate. Mine looks different than the one in that Wikipedia article, and it does not taste bitter, as does the Wikipedia one. Thanks.

I honestly think it was simply an aged boletus bicolor:

Not magic at all, and unfortunately resemble some boletes that can cause major indigestion.

Assuming you ate a mildly poisonous bolete is much more fun though! As a rule red boletes tend to be somewhat poisonous. That is what the cooking was for.
