The show takes place in Los Angeles, California, where Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber), who is originally from South Boston, is a "fixer" for the powerful law firm Goldman & Drexler that represents the rich and famous. However, he experiences his own problems when his father, Mickey Donovan (Jon Voight), is unexpectedly released from prison.

With a metacritic score of 75 and an average metacritic user score of 7.6, critics have called Ray Donovan "a muscular, instantly riveting series" (San Jose Mercury News) and "sharply written, sophisticated even at its most melodramatic, with first-class performances throughout" (Wall Street Journal). Boston Globe's Matthew Gilbert compared it to Breaking Bad and Mad Men: "It’s not as meticulous, cinematic, or original as those two shows, but it’s got the same kind of storytelling ambition. It’s the most vital new series of the year so far."
The acting is "great" (New York Post). Jon Voight "gives this drama its ferocious, dangerous and sometimes creepy edge" (Uncle Barky). "In Ray and Mickey, producer Ann Biderman has created two of TV's most interesting characters and one of its most absorbing dynamics." (USA Today.)
