Why are the mentally-ill people in this fora so resistant to the idea of medication? Yes, yes, I know you may have "tried it once and it didn't work," but I am telling you, modern psychiatric medication is a WONDERFUL thing, and it TRULY helps. Why not just try it?

Because it is cool and edgy to act like you know better than a trained professional. All those clinical trials and past cases? That stuff obviously doesn't prove anything.

I disagree. Modern psychiatric medication is nothing more than an avenue to profits for pharmaceutical companies and truly only helps those suffering from hallucinations and paranoia.

There is way more money to be made on widely prescribable, general use medications, than there is money to be made in things like: genetically unique therapies (such as gene therapy), higly personalized coctails of HIV treatment, and other types of "personalized medicine."

Unfortunately it looks like well never have a "cancer pill" but instead cancer is being cured by higly pesonalized therapies that can't be designed once and used for a generation. They are designed for individuals and sold once.

Drugs are about profits, not healing you. They want you sick and on drugs forever.
They want designer drugs and personalized medicine to remain too expensive for normal people, and cures to be forever on the horizon so they can rape us while they treat the symptoms.

Bullshit. Scientific studies have proven psychiatric drugs to work.

Do psychiatrists and drug company owners have monthly, secret meetings, in which they laughingly discuss how to keep people mentally-ill? That is a stupid conspiracy theory.

And there are studies to show depression medication makes people suicidal and plently of drugs have been taken off the market after it is shown they aren't as beneficial as studies have shown.

But this goes for all medicine. Not jusy psychiatric medicine.

Also I did say there are psychiatric medications that do help control hallucinations and paranoia that are pretty helpful

But unless you can see dragons you would do better to eat better and get some excercise than to take some of these newer psychiatric medications.

No, but personalized medicine has cured people of cancer and aids.
And theres no money in a 1 of 100k treatment.

You want to sell millions and millions of doses for the same cost of research. Pharmaceutical companies arent there to help people get well. They are there to manufacture drugs and make profits.

They don't make cures. No money in it.

Depression is something I would somewhat agree with you on. Pills probably aren't enough to fix the problem on its own, a stable, loving social circle is a big help. Pills aren't going to help long-term if you don't have a happy life to go back to, after all.

But of course, you have to remember that there can be causes other than a shitty life. Postnatal depression, for example (which my mother had), can arise in somebody with a perfectly happy life otherwise, and again can require more than pills to fix (listened to a woman in a college lecture that needed electric shock therapy to get over it).

But still, pills can help. It just has to be kept in mind that they're not a cure in and of themselves, and that other factors should be considered.

Because of the side effects. Psych meds are over-prescribed for all sorts of things and a lot of them make people utterly miserable, but at least compliant.

But people with real mental illness ARE helped by these medications.

Sure. But some find taking them intolerable. That doesn't mean they aren't mentally ill, if big pharma hasn't found a drug that they can stand taking yet.

I find it interesting that many people, mental health professionals too, are very willing to listen to and validate mentally ill people's experiences with the illness itself, but not their experiences with the drugs. They will believe that a person experiences delusions, hallucinations, a crippling inability to perform basic daily functions or socialize with people. But once a mentally ill person says, you know this drug may make me "seem" to be okay, but it's actually physically intolerable to take, those same people will appeal to their superior training or knowledge and say suck it up, whatever you're experiencing now isn't real to me. I know better than you. It's weird.
