Why are you so mad about people calling George Zimmerman a racist/murderer?

The racism thing may be because Ron Paul also had racist elements.

I'm genuinely confused because Meta is usually pretty cool on social issues. I will never understand people honestly equating shit like a black guy saying "cracker" and a white guy saying "nigger." It just seems so obvious to me that they are worlds apart in context of a society with continuing institutional racism.

What is it about libertarians, really?

We are fora friends, however I would currently appreciate it if you could choke on a dick. You may wash down the taste of dick with your choice of libation.

I was quite disturbed when he defended Ron Paul's statements about blacks being more prone to crime by posting pictures of black athletes.

The fact that many criminals are black has a clear environmental root, one that we can take steps to fix or at least improve. Acting as if there's an innate cause is wrong and unhelpful.

@OP
> Why are you so mad about people calling George Zimmerman a racist/murderer?
I'll preface this by starting with my thoughts on Zimmerman. I think Zimmerman was out of line in confronting Martin; he should have obeyed the recommendation of the police to stay in his truck. That being said, I feel there is substantial evidence that Martin escalated the confrontation and attacked Zimmerman, who reasonably feared great bodily harm, and fired his gun in self defense.

I also don't think Zimmerman was racist. He did not state Martin's race until he was specifically asked to by the police, and there is, I believe, no evidence that Zimmerman was racially motivated.

As for murder, I don't think it was done with intent to kill. I think if they charged him with involuntary manslaughter they would have (deservedly) gotten a conviction.

To repeat: I don't think Zimmerman was a hero, quite the opposite. He was looking for trouble and he found it. That's not honorable, and I hope it haunts him for the rest of his life. But I also don't like the numerous distortions made in the media (using a 5 year old photo of Trayvon as a 12 year old, NBC editing the police tapes, constant harping on the Stand Your Ground law, which was not relevant in this case, etc). Also, at least one prominent poster here said that this means it's "open season on blacks". I highly doubt that this person would have said "it's open season on white women and young Jewish men" after the OJ Simpson verdict came in.

I don't think I'm the most angry person about this case on the forum. I acknowledge that I am in the minority with my viewpoint, but hardly the most passionate in advocating it.

That image isn't Trayvon as a 12 year old. It was taken in August 2011 - he was 16. Thanks.

This is why I sometimes feel a little bad when I troll or criticise your political leanings. While mountainman is one of the most unlikable people I've come across, making it guilt-free to heap abuse on him, you are actually likeable as a person!

I can't take issue with a lot of what you say. But the focus on stand your ground is reasonable, I think. It was raised early on by the defense, it was part of the reason that charges were initially not filed, and it was something Zimmerman apparently lied about (there was evidence he learned about the doctrine in a class, but he denied that). It's also closely related to the self-defense defense and really fucked up in a lot of ways (especially that it's not restricted to your own property).

On, and there's this from the jury instructions:
If George Zimmerman was not engaged in an unlawful activity and was attacked in any place where he had a right to be, he had no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he reasonably believed that it was necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

Don't feel sad, heaven knows I've done some trolling myself.

This thread was at least 75% trolling, which I did when I was feeling depressed. This other thread was me genuinely wondering why calling a black person a "nigger" is incredibly offensive (unless you are black), but calling a white person a "cracker" is nothing at all in comparison. I think if we are truly equally valued in society, both words should be considered equally offensive, and we shouldn't use either of them.

I don't support racism of any kind, I feel we should give everyone an equal chance and judge people only based on their actions. There are good and evil, smart and dumb, people of every color.

As far as race goes, I think Brazil has the right idea: just unite everyone into one race. The human race.

I didn't say sad, just a little bad. A slight amount of guilt for making potentially hurtful barbs against a guy I actually like.
