At work, slow as hell, not even supposed to be on my phone, no texts from friends, no facebook notifications, not even a good email. Apparently, I have no friends.
To make things worse, I didn't get the promotion I applied for, which wouldn't be so bad if the person who got the job didn't have just a GED while I'm a college graduate who's been with the company for four years and has all the skill-sets and experience they were looking for. They base everything purely on seniority and it's bullshit.
Every time I try to talk to them about moving up, the message I basically get is "you're too good at what you're doing to promote," yet when I ask for more hours they claim that they can't afford it, yet every time I have a review they bitch that enough work isn't getting done.
I still get paid more than most people in my position, but I'm on the same pay scale as cart pushers, despite my skills, and it's pissing me off. I would have gotten a better job by now if the economy wasn't such a piece of shit. I can't wait for all the baby boomers to retire and make more room for some fresh blood in the job market.

Free time on your hands!!!! This is what I suggest to others I know and so far it has paid off - This method assumes you have the spare time. - In my work I use blogs /work/related/ have even met r/t a number of people as a result and have HIRED and I mean HIRED many as a result.
Not having a clue what you do - Find out where people doing what you do - where are they posting/playing on net. You know the term networking. Time to get with it and start to network with your bored spare time. They may be in similar spots as you? Then again they may also offer help re being with a firm that is in fact hiring a. Yes economy is crap - but people are being hired all over this land. Those using the traditional ports of entry are stuck in the traffic jam. Look for back doors.
I have a few examples of simple things I have tried when bizzz was really slow - Now I wish I could off load stuff I have taken on [you would have to ask me]
- Finding competent people to off load is my number one road block - So the blogs work for me to get to know a few and are others doing as I? Absolutely. HR people who have been ragged on by dept managers have moved away from the place adds and see what applies- Just the sorting out of 5000 applicants makes the process impractical. When you submit a resume, make sure its a custom one just for the position - Including the cover letter - The best full time job I took in the last 2 decades - It wasn't the resume that got the attention I wanted - It was the cover letter - Cover letter contained a few words that were NOT in my Resume - Scanner and software were looking for those "magic words"
Research the company you want to work for backwards and forwards - Pull down the 10K - Hit the web and get to know the web site and really study where it sends you. At interview they may say, you're not a fit - but IF you know enough to ask about other areas, you know you would fit - Surprise may await you. I could rite a book on this subject of how to find a job.
