Didn't read the thread so I don't know if it's been asked but do you have physical access to the broken computer? You can just extract the drive if the monitor is the problem.

Is it a laptop or a desktop? I assume it is a laptop if the screen breaking is such a big issue. Any geek worth his salt will have a 2.5 inch drive enclosure and be willing to help you with data migration, go and hunt one down!
