Anyone else miffed you can't romance Bethany?

If I can't have My character fuck his sister, why the hell would I want him to fuck a character at all? It's kind of weird to begin with.

As Deckard Cain said, it's a bit creepy that one of the hottest characters in the game is your sister.

The game had a slow start but it ended up being awesome =-0. Also, I agree. If I can't explore Bethany's deep roads it looks like I'll just let Fenris fill me with Lyrium

Yeah they did a similar thing in Mass Effect 2. How far in are you?

My impression of this game is that it appeals to pathetic nerds who like to pretend they're dragon-slaying vikings with a harem of prehistoric supermodels. But I admit I haven't heard of it before this thread.

I haven't played this travesty yet. I really enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins, and I hear they have dumbed down the combat, the writing is terribad, and the dungeons are reused throughout the game. May still try to pirate this at some point, but I feel a big letdown with this sequel.

It's really not as bad as the hardcore rpg crowd are making out. The combat is enjoyable but still tactical, and the plot is far more emotive and clever.

Every bioware game ever reuses building and dungeon models over 9000 times. In fact, they have been making the same game for a decade. Jade Empire, Mass Effects 1&2 and both DA games are just KOTOR clones.

The combat is more fun, DA1 had a more in depth combat system but it was slow and tedious. (You ever play a 2h warrior in da1? That was the most boring time I've ever had in RPG combat). DA2 is hack and slash and gory, it is enjoyable but not as in depth.

The story sucks big black dick at the beginning, but it gets interesting and it's enjoyable over all. The change is very much like the change from Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 2. They streamlined inventory and combat and geared the game more toward the console crowd. I'm not sure how I'd rate the writing, the overall story arc isn't as good but it has some really good characters. The Arishok is one of the best voiced and most interesting characters I've seen in an RPG in a while.

As far as party character development? It sucks. There are no where near as many convo trees for your party as you will be used to in a bioware game and all your party members are cookie-cutter as fuck. (Slutty Pirate, Street-savvy thief dwarf, emo guy, naive optimist chick, ect ect)

edit: Main character development is great though. They went the Mass Effect route and gave him full voice, a name, a past, ect. I feel like that is a better route for the sort of game bioware makes. (As opposed to the Elder Scrolls route they took in DA1 where YOU are the hero.)

I've heard the combat only gets close to being like DA:O if you pump the difficulty up. The only hack 'n slash games I've ever enjoyed were Dynasty Warriors.

@previous (Deckard Cain !xhERPesk0k)
Played a dual wielding rogue and a sword and shield warrior in DA:O and loved every second of it. I'm just miffed that they took a series with a lot of potential and rushed it so much that it came out looking like a polished turd. I'm debating on pirating it, if I like it I may buy it when the price drops.

I played through DA1 with every character type, rogues were very fun. I pirated this game because I bought KOTOR1, KOTOR2, DAO, and Jade Empire legit. I've paid for this game plenty of times. (As I said, this is just a KOTOR clone)

The graphics are good and the armor models have been improved. I wouldn't say it looks like a "polished turd", the game is very very good. It just seems "bad" because you are comparing it to biowares other epic titles. As far as RPGs go it's one of the best (top 15). But when you compare it to biowares other games... it is the 2nd worst they've ever put out. (Jade Empire being the worst)

edit: The problem is the console crowd. Everything they changed and dumbed down was for console sales.

I have a hard time putting it in the top 50 RPG list if I were to make one honestly. I don't completely blame Bioware though. EA bought them out and had them rush this hardcore. I think I am harsher on this game because the expectations were high. I really liked the first (I've always been a fan of medievil fantasy) and thought the second would be improved in all aspects. I was very unimpressed with the demo though, and after reading a fair amount of user reviews (fuck the professionals they don't rate anything lower than 7) I got more and more disgusted with it. I agree completely that they basically reversed the issue they had with the first one. That being that the controls didn't translate to consoles well, and with this release they streamlined the controls so it plays smoother on the consoles.

They certainly over-did it with the console conversion. It's definetly top 50 though, unless you are one of those guys who thinks every recycled JRPG is "ZOMG GOLD" when in reality it's recycled shit. I also agree with you about pro reviews. I don't bother with them. They get paid to rate things with a bias, it's bullshit. I hope bioware learns from their mistakes but I doubt they will. Too many games lately have been completely fucked because they are made for consoles and watered down.

Console hardware is old and shitty, they need to update them. In DA2 they have to separate the city into like 30 stupid mini-maps because they wanted to give the area good graphics and consoles would have to sit on like 40 minute load times if they didn't split it up. You ever play Morrowind on a console? Boot that bitch up and walk away for twenty minutes because it's going to be a while! Morrowind was fucking amazing though, because they didn't water it down.

It appears as if we're pretty much in agreement and just repeating points though so I'm going to go to lunch! Have a good day!!! =-O

The only JRPG series I can confess to is Final Fantasy. I am one of those that pleads with people to play deeper into FFXIII simply because it really does open up towards the final chapter. It was a step back in my opinion though. Iunno, you have swayed me a little more towards getting DA2, but with Shogun 2 Total War coming out today I may hold that thought. I never played much of Morrowind, but I really like Oblivion, and I can't friggin' wait for Skyrim. I'll concede that DA2 might make top 50 once I play it, but it's bragging a review naming it the best rpg of our time. On that I call bull shit.

Yeah I have seen that one on /v/ a few times. It's a little weird to me that in DA2 they reveal that the Qunari all have big horns except for Stens which is now a title and not a name. At least that last bit fits, since Sten in DA:O was very stoic and never shed much light on his background. He was still a badass though. Do you happen to have the side by side comparison of Alistair from DA:O and DA2? That one is the funniest to me. People on /v/ were defending it saying that it is because he was older. Right, he became poorly rendered in his later years....uh huh.

Don't buy it, pirate it. I saw a review saying it "set the standard for RPGs for this decade" ahahaha such BS. It's not awesome but it's not bad either.

Also @53,137 (psychopath !PSYCHOhc32) the guy who took those screenshots has a shit pc, the fire and blood look a lot better than than if you aren't running on a lite-brite =p. The second panel is showing a glitch, not a real face (I never had any glitches) and you can download a high-res pack from the bioware site, they couldn't fit in on the dvd. (I'm not sure why they don't just ship another dvd with the retail, though.)

On a semi-related note, Bioware is handing out bans that block you from playing any Bioware games. So far the longest has only been 72 hours. They claimed it is a glitch, but hasn't been fixed in the last few days. So if you play Bioware games, do not, under any circumstance, make disparaging remarks on their forums. Ain't that some shit.

Tell me how it is! I have burnt many many hours on the Total War series!

SWTOR has hope. It isn't made by SoE so it'll have a better chance than many MMOs. I just pray that it isn't a WoW clone. You can't beat WoW by trying to be WoW, you have to come up with something new.

I agree to an extent. I've gotten into Rift lately, and while most detractors say it's just a wow clone (in some aspects in really is) it has a lot to keep me intrigued. I somewhat see the familiarity of the wow ui as a good thing so I didn't have to learn how to interact with npcs like in FFXI.

It lacks the polished movie feel of the first. I haven't gotten far yet and I've done three of the same dungeon already.

It's still a fun game. It does seem to be easier, but maybe I haven't faced a difficult opponent yet. I'm still in kirkwood.

Yea, overall it's not the "holy shit this is amazing in every way" but I understand suits put the pressure on. The first game also hade huge replay value with the different starting scenarios.

It's still a good game though. I wouldn't have likely picked up the second if the first had been like this. All you need is a good first in a series, then the suits will try to churn out cheap copies until it's bled dry. The exception being elder scrolls.
