Topic: Why is the Paula Deen controversy such a big deal?
Meta !PARAdoxiHw started this discussion 13 years ago#28,862
All she did was say the word "nigger" in a joke thirty fucking years ago. Its not like she was Grand Wizard of the Atlanta Klan stringing people up and burning crosses.
I tried watching an episode of The Boondocks TV show once and it was 22 minutes of nonstop black stereotypes and they used the word "nigger" about every two seconds. And don't me started on the nigga vs nigger controversy: its the same goddamn word.

For me, it's mostly a good excuse to justify my hatred for her.
Although I certainly don't condone the use of the word "nigger", and she did a little more than make one joke.

I can understand hating her, and her "yo dawg, we herd you like butter" cooking style is polarizing, but still it was 30 years ago.

Did you actually look into this? She made many racist comments, and they were recent

Yeah I know about that, but many people act like this is solely about her saying the word nigger decades ago. very odd

@previous (kook !!32zdfdzi+) > When asked about the servers she reportedly said, “Well what I would really like is a bunch of little niggers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around.”
That shit just doesn't get old.

It's racism. Whites are not allowed to use the word BECAUSE they are white.

It's ownership. It's this way with every marginalized group/identity. Fuck off.

Yeah, just like whites used to own the front seats on all the busses. That wasn't racism at all.

It has to do with her image, the Boondocks has always been a show full of racial humor whereas Paula Deen has a more wholesome image attached to her name, or at least had.
But yes we are oversensitive crybabies, and she is being crucified because sensationalism makes money, and she got fired not because the Food Network really gives a shit about Paula being racist, but because of the massive negative she received that ultimately reflected poorly on the Food Network.
She was stupid to have admitted to saying "nigger", and is paying the price.

fucked up world when we reward liars and punish the truthful.

Sure, but you either play game or you lose it. We don't reward liars, if Paula Deen lied and later was revealed to be dishonest, she would be worse off. Liars only prosper if no one discovers them which is unfortunate, but you would never even know about cases where this happens.

Oh shit, you mean to say that advertisers and television networks get to decide who they want to contract with based on their own opinions about what would be good for business?? The injustice!
