It's a story. The author crafted the characters and story to appeal to the intended audience despite the terrible writing.
Does the poor writing make it poor art? What of the opinions of the millions who love the stories? I don't care for it, but I think it's good a terrible writer could become a success on the merits of her story alone.

I'm not the intended audience, so this is just a guess but I believe it's the story and the character of Bella. I think there are many females who like to see themselves as her. The idea of an attractive older strong man sweeping them off their feet is very appealing.
