@previous (!KThEOwLwbU) > implying that the dragonborn isn't going to be officially ambigous regarding civil war allegiance > implying that the Dragonborn killing scores of Thalmor ingame isn't merely due to the nature of said gameplay. In the lore, the Thalmor would be sending in actual armies, not just like 30 dudes spread out in one fort.
But I suppose if you like the idea of Skyrim becoming overtly racist and losing a war followed by becoming part of an oppressive regime that hates Nords, by all means the Stormcloaks are your guys.

So the Dragonborn could stand up to the might of three provices worth of troops and resources?
In this scenario, Skyrim is isolated too. The Empire won't help them because they've just been humiliated by Ulfric. So the Thalmor get an easy time invading a lone province which has just come out of a civil war. Exactly as the Thalmor planned.

Skyrim is protected by mountain ranges which restricts entry to a few choke points. also the empire will aid skyrim against the thalmor because it is in the empire's best interests for the dominion to not have more power than it already does
also hammerfell will harass their rear like they always have done

The Thalmor also have ships, and Skyrim has a coast. It's not going to be that easy to defend. They're up against an enemy with far more resources than them.
> also the empire will aid skyrim against the thalmor because it is in the empire's best interests for the dominion to not have more power than it already does
But will it? Thanks to Ulfric, the whole third legion (I believe it was the third, anyway) has been badly brutalised. So they're not in the best shape to give aid to begin with. And relations with the Stormcloaks are going to be strained at best. Between all of Ulfric's nationalist rhetoric and the Emprire's view that Skyrim belongs to them, they are not going to co-operate well.
> also hammerfell will harass their rear like they always have done
The last time Hammerfell fought the Thalmor, they were fighting a Dominion which had been weakened by the war with a (three province) Empire. Now they'd be up against a revitalised Dominion. And they wouldn't be fighting on their home turf, since the Thalmor would probably not bother invading them at that stage.

The stormcloak is the most understandable at first, since they didn't try to kill you and they hate the empire and the elves for banning the worship of Talos, but when you get more into the game, you begin to realize that the empire isn't a big evil thing that has arrived to destroy the prosperity, but to try to negotiate and bring peace. The stormcloak is what people join as a kneejerk reaction while the Empire is better when you get down to it.

Still, good for you. See, the Empire is playing the long game. Once Ulfric's grab at power is stopped and the Empire's strength is back, they'll likely be able to beat the Thalmor and bring Talos worship back.

He's not a spy for them, but yes, they view him as a major asset.
No matter what, if Ulfric's in the picture then the Thalmor benefit. He's waging a civil war, then the Nords and, crucially, the Empire are being continually worn down. He wins, and the Empire has obviously taken a big hit and Skyrim is all by itself, and not protected by the White-Gold concordant, as it has seceded from the Empire.

It sure would. They'd be easy pickings for the Thalmor. Three perfectly strong provinces of resources versus one isolated province which has just come out of a civil war.
Potential cooperation with the Empire will be extremely difficult at best, given that the Stormcloaks are going to jumpy as fuck about Legionaries coming back into Skyrim. The Empire would likely have to stay out of it, and any aid they gave would probably be too indirect to be notably helpful.
TL;DR: a Stormcloak victory is a Thalmor victory.

As much as I sympathize with the stormcloaks, it is simply for the best of everyone if Ulfric were imprisoned and the Empire restored control, if only until the Thalmor are defeated. That is why I side with the empire, even though I would loathe the idea. I love the execution of who you must side with. It gives you the knee-jerk reaction option of siding with the stormcloaks because the Empire almost killed you, and the more logical option of remaining loyal to the empire.

the third legion is corrupt and decaying, just like the empire it serves. it was already breaking up when the mede's took control. ps i murdered the emperor too. if the empire recognises skyrim as an independent nation then they will by necessity have to release their view that skyrim belongs to them. its a asimple fact man the empire is not hip at all the best thing to do is develop a Special Relationship™ like us and americans. in fact us and americans are like the perfect real-world example of why fighting for skyrim is better, look at where they are now. also fact, any nation that tries to murder me gets destroyed if i have the opportunity. maybe they could have picked like a better opening omg
> The last time Hammerfell fought the Thalmor, they were fighting a Dominion which had been weakened by the war with a (three province) Empire.
hammerfell still resists them, all alone
It's a simple fact, the thalmor would either have to fight skyrim in narrow chokepoints and force entry that way (you can look at history to see how battles in narrow chokepoints turn out re defenders numbers v attackers) or they would have to land on the few strategic amphibious landing points and hope they can get a more reliable supply point before winter

Frozen enough to walk on, in fact.
> the third legion is corrupt and decaying, just like the empire it serves.
Source? Their Legate, Rikke, is clearly the furthest thing from corrupt. And Tullius is a good man too. Bar some initial misunderstanding about the Nords, he respects the land he's fighting for.
> it was already breaking up when the mede's took control. ps i murdered the emperor too.
And the Medes are doing a very good job of revitalising it. Also, the Emperor that *may* have been canonically assassinated likely had heirs.
> if the empire recognises skyrim as an independent nation then they will by necessity have to release their view that skyrim belongs to them.
But they won't. It'd be redundant anyway, since Skyrim would become Thalmor territory not too long after the Stormcloaks took over.
> its a asimple fact man the empire is not hip at all the best thing to do is develop a Special Relationship™ like us and americans.
But there's several Nords who express support for the Empire. It's not a clean-cut thing, for some the Empire is still very much a good thing.
And good luck developing a "special relationship" when the Skyrim government is manned by a load of raging nationalists who hate your guts for banning their favourite god. Again, a Stormcloak-Empire alliance is going to be extremely strained and difficult.
> in fact us and americans are like the perfect real-world example of why fighting for skyrim is better, look at where they are now.
Skyrim is not America. For one, America did not have a superpower (I'd say that the Thalmor are a Tamrielic equivilant, anyway) ready to pounce on them once they were alone. And the Thalmor will do it, because it's very much in their interest to do so. Don't know how deep into the lore you are, but in a nutshell they want to ban Talos worship to make Talos weaker.
> also fact, any nation that tries to murder me gets destroyed if i have the opportunity. maybe they could have picked like a better opening omg
It's actually quite clever. Like Walt said, it's giving you that opening to make the Stormcloaks seem more attractive. It actually fits in very well with the factions themselves. Stormcloaks seem good in the short-term, but it's very much the Empire who are the better choice in the long-term.

You have to jump every ten seconds to clear a gap, supply wagons can't do that and it's not like it would be easy for the soldiers to march across the frozen sea, look what happened to Bonaparte when he tried to invade Russia. Massive losses due to the extreme cold. Elf are weak, not hardy like strong ox-hand nord.
> Source? Their Legate, Rikke, is clearly the furthest thing from corrupt. And Tullius is a good man too. Bar some initial misunderstanding about the Nords, he respects the land he's fighting for.
Not enough to stop the Thalmor doing a soft invasion. You can see groups of Thalmor soldiers walking around hunting "renegades" in the Imperial-held holds. The empire has no foundation. They're lying on their backs and letting the Thalmor rampage over them. You can find in the game proof that the Thalmor are preparing for another invasion anyway, and nothing is being done in the Empire to match them when the great war resumes. Only by forcing Elven hands early does the world of man stand a hope against the gold-skinned menace. No amount of respect for the land can help the fact that they're being defeated by poorly-equipped and rag-tag freedom fighters (P.S this gives them good experience in how to defeat the Thalmor - the war was classic warfare with standing armies, but one can look to Afghanistan today to see how a standing army fares against gorilla warfare - we've been there for 10 years and the Taliban still control most of the country and will almost certainly topple the puppet government once NATO --retreats-- "pulls out").
> And the Medes are doing a very good job of revitalising it
Are they? They've lost half the imperial provinces since their coup. They're trying to stop it sinking and they aren't strong enough. The empire needs a strong leader if it has to survive. Only Ulfric can save Skyrim from utter annihilation by preparing her people for total war (he ruminates that he must start preparing for the Thalmor once you win him Skyrim). Many will die, but it's better to die a free man than to live as a humiliated slave.
> But they won't. It'd be redundant anyway, since Skyrim would become Thalmor territory not too long after the Stormcloaks took over.
If it was that cut and dry, the Thalmor would provide aid the Stormcloaks, obviously not openly but in secret and through proxy. But in the Thalmor dossier, it states that a Stormcloak victory is to be avoided. The Thalmor want there to be ongoing hostilities between the Empire and the Kingdom of Skyrim because it would mean that Skyrim is weaker as a result of having to fight two fronts. Ulfric is nationalistic but not an idiot, he knows that this is a strategy they want. Once Skyrim is secured, he will reach to the Empire as an Equal, which is the entire point of his wanting self-determination. The Imperial Provinces are major trading points for Skyrim, they will want to establish good relations ASAP after which will naturally follow military alliance.
This is important: The Thalmor are preparing to invade again. It's not a question of "Once they're alone they will do it", they're preparing to do it already and are simply trying to make it so that they can flatten the world instead of having to struggle for it.
> It's actually quite clever. Like Walt said, it's giving you that opening to make the Stormcloaks seem more attractive. It actually fits in very well with the factions themselves. Stormcloaks seem good in the short-term, but it's very much the Empire who are the better choice in the long-term.
I disagree. The Empire is tearing itself apart and is undergoing tremendous internal strife. The model of a central government controlling provinces has failed and they are at the verge of annihilation as a result. The Empire is unwieldy, slow to act and difficult to co-ordinate, and so is the Aldmeri Dominion. This is why the great war was so terrible, because these two huge forces finally gained steam and then crashed into each other. Had the Empire been more flexible, faster, more ingenuitive in warfare, the Thalmor would have been broken. For example, the Thalmor engage in Blitzkrieg - the great war has a lot of similarities to the Nazi invasion of Russia. They penetrated quickly and surrounded the Imperial City and destroyed any Empirical army put in their way. But what would have happened if they had been quicker to act?
If there was an option to have the Empire concede Skyrim as a province and transform into a federation, I would have taken that. Unfortunately, an Independent, strong, consolidated and fast nation is the only option to the imperial province that Cyrodil can order about to protect itself.
The Great War has a lot of similarities to the Nazi invasion of Russia. In that case, the invaders were repulsed by overwhelming numbers, but that isn't an option in this case. The Thalmor didn't plan to invade Cyrodil but took the option after they discovered that it was weakly defended. A smart strategist would have done this on purpose - the Thalmor are obviously rash and prefer to take the dangerous option (despite all their hot air) and they rushed to the capital. So what would have happened if instead of meeting the Thalmor on the field, the Imperial army retreated at the front and utilised a scorched earth policy whilst others harassed the rear and disrupted supplies? What would have happened if the entire command system wasn't contained in the capital because that's just how the system of Empire functions? What would have happened if it was the Mede Federation and there were a variety of army systems and commanders?
You're correct in saying that in traditional warfare, the Thalmor would defeat Skyrim. However, I don't for one second believe that the Stormcloaks would actually try to engage in traditional warfare with the Thalmor. The Thalmor would invade Skyrim expecting to meet legions on a field and have a sword battle, not to meet no resistance, no people and then one day discover that the food from home has stopped rolling in and becoming weaker and weaker, then one day waking up in the middle of the night to a full-strength Skyrim army pillaging the camp. The Empire would attempt to do what they did in the great war, and they'd lose. The Kingdom of Skyrim would take the lessons they learned from their war of independence and engage in asymmetrical warfare which the Thalmor would have no answer to.
Wow we really are virgins, huh.

All the Thalmor have to do is land a load of troops and overwhelm some underdefended coastal town like Winterhold (and perhaps Dawnstar, though they'd be much harder than Winterhold). Hell, they could even just set up a camp of their own somewhere. Once they've done that, they'd got a good foothold and can land supplies and troops at their leisure.
And while that's happening, more Thalmor will still be pushing through conventional, land based routes. Skyrim would be nearly surrounded.
> Not enough to stop the Thalmor doing a soft invasion. You can see groups of Thalmor soldiers walking around hunting "renegades" in the Imperial-held holds. The empire has no foundation. They're lying on their backs and letting the Thalmor rampage over them.
Only because of the White-Gold concordant. And the Empire needs to allow the Justiciars to comply with the concordant. Obviously they're not happy about it, but it's a necessary evil until the Empire is strong enough to smack the Thalmor down.
> and nothing is being done in the Empire to match them when the great war resumes.
I doubt that. If he wins the civil war, Tullius hints that he's quite aware that the Empire will be coming into conflict with the Thalmor soon. If he is, then obviously the Empire is.
And what do you think holding on to Skyrim is about? They're holding on to vital resources so that they're strong enough to challenge the Thalmor.
> Only by forcing Elven hands early does the world of man stand a hope against the gold-skinned menace.
Nah, man needs to consolidate and built its strength. Fracturing and attacking while they're still building up will only result in a quick end.
> No amount of respect for the land can help the fact that they're being defeated by poorly-equipped and rag-tag freedom fighters (P.S this gives them good experience in how to defeat the Thalmor - the war was classic warfare with standing armies, but one can look to Afghanistan today to see how a standing army fares against gorilla warfare - we've been there for 10 years and the Taliban still control most of the country and will almost certainly topple the puppet government once NATO retreats "pulls out").
The Stormcloaks aren't really poorly-equipped ragtag guerrilla fighters, though. Don't forget, they've got holds that support them, which means steady resources and clear territory. They're more or less a legitimate standing army.
> Are they? They've lost half the imperial provinces since their coup. They're trying to stop it sinking and they aren't strong enough. The empire needs a strong leader if it has to survive.
He had the Thalmor to deal with, it's arguable that no amount of leadership could have stopped such a strong military power which was also highly skilled at manipulation. Though all we can do is speculate. But given the crappy situation that he inhereted, I'd say that Mede did the best that he could.
> Only Ulfric can save Skyrim from utter annihilation by preparing her people for total war (he ruminates that he must start preparing for the Thalmor once you win him Skyrim).
he's not exactly in a great position to do this, though. His forces have just come out of a civil war, and he will be more or less alone against a superpower. If the Empire wins, it's the Thalmor's three provinces against the Empire's three provinces (Hammerfell could also potentially jump in and attack the Thalmor, though they're certainly not pals with the Empire).
> If it was that cut and dry, the Thalmor would provide aid the Stormcloaks, obviously not openly but in secret and through proxy. But in the Thalmor dossier, it states that a Stormcloak victory is to be avoided.
That's because the an ongoing civil war is the ideal situation for the Thalmor. Two of your greatest enemies fighting it out, continually wearing eachother down. The longer it goes on, the more worn out each side will get. A Stormcloak victory is just the next best thing, and likely what they'd want the civil war's eventual outcome to be anyway.
> Ulfric is nationalistic but not an idiot, he knows that this is a strategy they want. Once Skyrim is secured, he will reach to the Empire as an Equal, which is the entire point of his wanting self-determination. Yes, I agree that both powers would make some attempt to ally if the Thalmor invaded a Stormcloak Skyrim, but a Stormcloak-Imperial alliance would be strained at best. How are the highly nationalistic and racist Stormcloak soldiers going to feel about ther Legion coming to Skyrim in force? Will the Legionaries be too kind towards the guys who have just slaughtered one of the finest Imperial generals? The whole thing would be rife with "friendly fire" incidents.
> This is important: The Thalmor are preparing to invade again. It's not a question of "Once they're alone they will do it", they're preparing to do it already and are simply trying to make it so that they can flatten the world instead of having to struggle for it.
And a united Empire is much better to deal with this than a much weakened Empire and a lone, weakened province.
> I disagree. The Empire is tearing itself apart and is undergoing tremendous internal strife. The model of a central government controlling provinces has failed and they are at the verge of annihilation as a result.
It only failed because of the extreme stress it underwent as a result of the Oblivion Crisis, which various upstart factions like the Thalmor and An-Xileel were able to capitalise on. Before that, it was going pretty well.
> This is why the great war was so terrible, because these two huge forces finally gained steam and then crashed into each other. I'd say that the Empire did so poorly during the great war because, well, look at the state it was in previously. Mede took over the Imperial city with less than a thousand men. If they'd been at their full strength, they would have done much better.
> If there was an option to have the Empire concede Skyrim as a province and transform into a federation, I would have taken that.
Which would do little to stop nationalist sentiments. Stormcloaks would still be pushing for full independance, becuase that's what they're fixated on.
> The Great War has a lot of similarities to the Nazi invasion of Russia. In that case, the invaders were repulsed by overwhelming numbers, but that isn't an option in this case. What would have happened if it was the Mede Federation and there were a variety of army systems and commanders?
But defending the Imperial City makes sense. It's got huge walls, and is the Empire's capital. What would have happened to morale if the Empire had just let the Imperial City go?
> You're correct in saying that in traditional warfare, the Thalmor would defeat Skyrim. On the contrary, I'd say that the Thalmor are far from some blunt, blockheaded military power. They have Valenwood and Elsweyr behind them, for one. A whole nation of people who are going to be very good at unconventional warfare. And note how often the Thalmore use manipulation to achieve their ends. No, a Thalmor invasion of Skyrim would be a bit more than simply marching in the troops and trying to overwhelm the Nords.

Also, talk to Adrianne Avenicci in Whiterun after the Stormcloaks take over. Gives you a damn clear view of what the Stormcloaks are like.
Basically, she says that the Stormcloaks are highly reluctant to buy things from her becuase she's an Imperial, and only purchase what little they do due to her Nord husband.
Do you see shit like that from the Imperials? Nah. Stormcloaks are a load of racist twats who openly dislike anybody who isn't a Nord (they make exceptions for those who are willing to join them, of course, but "join our army or you're scum" isn't much better anyway).

There may be some lingering resentment, sure, but if an Altmer was definetely not aligned with the Thalmor then the Imperials probably wouldn't mind them. And again, Altmer Legate up there.
> Anyway, I support the Stormcloaks for FREEDURM reasons,
Yes, FREEDRUM!
(Except if you don't suppot Ulfric, then Stormcloak soldiers are free to abuse you!)

And what do you think that Ulfric is trying to do?
> Plus I always roleplay as a Nord-Nerd so it's like yeah.
