Topic: What's your opinion on banning muslim women from wearing niqabs, hijabs, and burqas?

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #2,852

Quick facts.
Hijab - Hair till neck is covered, face can be seen.
Niqab - Only eyes can be seen.
Burqa - Entire face is covered.

Hijabs shouldn't be banned. Niqabs and Burqas should. The hijab can make a positive statement about celebrating religious beliefs and cultural traditions. Niqabs and Burqas take it to an extreme extent. It creates fear and suspicion towards Muslims in general. If they intend to move to somewhere where their beliefs are conflicting with another country, they might as well remain in their original homelands where they might feel a better sense of belonging and acceptance.

People should just be able to do whatever they want.

It creates such unnecessary controversy though.
Should women have to de-veil for photo ID's? Should women have to de-veil when entering banks? Should stores have to allow those that wear burqas? Should businesses have to employ those that wear them? Should schools have to accept veiled students? And, should schools have to accept adults that wear the veil and come to school to pick up their kid in a veil, when it may be hard to determine if they are actually the parent? Should it be banned in public transportation, where terrorist threats are greatest? And, what about the babies of those that wear burqas, whose vitamin D deficiencies cause them to develop rickets? What's the policy on pregnant women wearing the burqa? And, what about driving, when a burqa limits range of vision and poses a traffic safety issue?

I say let them do what they want, unless it obstructs local laws or customs.

Hypothetical situation. You are a bank teller, and a woman in a burqa comes in to make a deposit. You need a photo ID in order to grant access to the bank account. She hands you the ID, but you have no way of being sure it really is that person. To ask her to take it off may cause offence, but without being able to properly identify her you can't proceed with business. Would you still think they should be able to wear these if they so choose?

Yes, Yes (As long as the school is aware and the parent signs an agreement not to sue if someone abducts or w/e)

No
> And, what about the babies of those that wear burqas, whose vitamin D deficiencies cause them to develop rickets?
Targeted public awareness campaign, child services may need to get involved
> What's the policy on pregnant women wearing the burqa?
The same as for non-pregnant women
> And, what about driving, when a burqa limits range of vision and poses a traffic safety issue?
Disallow them, charge with neglectful driving when caught wearing them and fine.

That's not how bank transactions work. To deposit money into a bank account, one needs no identification whatsoever. To withdraw money, one needs their chip&PIN card. They confirm their access by inputting their PIN.

To make a deposit, no ID identification is needed (at least in the Euroland I've been at)... just to pick up money...

On topic. You'd band it completely cause there is a few situations it's not acceptable to have your face covered?

By that logic, a shitload of stuff should be completely banned cause there are places they aren't allowed at.

So you are saying as long as someone has my acct.# they can add money without having to notify me whatsoever?
As well, why would you walk in to the bank if you were simply withdrawing cash as if from an atm? I meant more along the lines of going INSIDE the bank to a teller to withdraw an amount, let's say in the form of a money order. I don't know what kind of security your bank has, but any transactions with the bank (outside of using the atm) requires proper photo identification.

I would say yes, if that is what they choose. Their choice may mean that they may not be able to do certain things like drive or engage in transactions that require a photo ID. The options are theirs to weigh though.

Could be any number of reasons. I do it when I want to withdraw a specific amount of money, or less than £10. They have a chip and pin machine which you use to confirm your access to the bank account.

Right right the atm, Automated Teller Machine. You put in your card, give your pin and can withdraw cash. When I want to add money to my account or withdraw money in increments other than $20 (that's all my bank's atm will do) I need a photo ID to verify that I am the account holder. It seems odd to me that they would so easily allow someone to steal your identity. I know it seems silly if they are DEPOSITING money, but the fact of the matter is I am the only one with access to my account and they have steps to ensure this is true.

I don't think that they shouldn't be allowed to wear them in any situation that a mask or hat would not be acceptable.

Yes, we do have cash machines in uncivilised Britain. I know how an ATM works. But Chip&PIN is standardised here, so there is no need to carry a valuble passport with you everywhere. All you need is your bank card and PIN code, which only you should know.

> It seems odd to me that they would so easily allow someone to steal your identity.

It's not stealing your identity, it's putting money into your bank account. We're all of the opinion that if people want to give you free money, then fair play to them. It only matters if someone is trying to steal from you.

Sorry, this Chip&PIN thing is new to me so I assumed it was different term for ATM. I have no hate for brits yo. I can get where you are coming from with adding money to your account, but I mean, they don't verify that this person has any right to access your account. Seems silly to me, I guess I'm just used to my bank.

> Sorry, this Chip&PIN thing is new to me so I assumed it was different term for ATM.

ATM is a machine that you can get money from. Chip&PIN is a system of cashless payment, etc. Your bank card has a chip on it which contains bank account information, and when you want to buy things you place your card in the machine, input your PIN code and it validates then processes the transaction, deducting the cost of your goods directly from your bank account. Almost everywhere has one of these machines now, you'd have to go really out fo the way and find the smallest village possible to find a shop that doesn't have one. Pic related, it's my Chip&PIN card.

> they don't verify that this person has any right to access your account. Seems silly to me

It's not really access to your account. They have to go in there, give your account number and name and say 'I'd like to make a deposit to the account'. They can't change any of your details. They can't take anything from you. They don't find anything about you. I think it's silly that you'd block someone from paying money into your account. It seems like you're just making life harder for yourself.

Just never heard the phrase Chip&PIN. Just call it an ATM/debit card. Threw me way off. I don't see it as being harder at all. Just have to hand my ID card over. I keep it on me at all times as it is.

What if you want someone else to pay money in for you? You have to go all the way to your bank yourself to do it. It's hassle.
