Topic: For some reason I have both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Word Starter

It's a pain because everything opens up in Word Starter by default unless I open Microsoft Word first.

I just decided to uninstall Starter. Do you think this will go well?

Have you tried deleting System32 yet? That usually helps.

Right click on document, select "open with" and you should have the choice to open it by default with either word or word starter.

Oh, no. When I got rid of Starter, it decided I don't have any Microsoft Word on my computer at all. Except that I do, and I can open any of these files as long as I open Microsoft Word first. Does this make sense? Of course not.

You should try it anyway. Go to right click -> Open with -> Other programs... Look for Microsoft Office Word in the list and try that. Is it still the same dialog as that thing?

It's already set to open in MS Word 2010, it just... doesn't recognize Word when I open a file, unless I open Word first.

Normally you can choose what extension opens with a file YOU Choose unless there is a default. So you can change that.

Open control panel programs default programs SET Associations

Then click on CHANGE PROGRAM and select.

Now here comes the hummmmm is that OTHER Word program Still on the list?

This is where things get sticky. First a question - When you used MS uninstall and it sent that program to the Recycle bin - did you leave it there or clean out the bin?

IF the free word program is not on the File Associations list? Registry may still contain wot is fucking things up. If that is the case its best IF you can re-install all from your Recycle bin.

And leave it alone and then use Open control panel programs default programs SET Associations to set it up just as you want to.

MS programs removal has improved but the Revo free program is just super at getting rid of all the old Registry files MS usually leaves behind.

I am betting that you can solve this simply with the Control File tools.

You should be able to reset file associations using winword /r at the command line. You might want to do this from the directory where your copy of MS Word is installed just to make sure.

Alternately, there are several free utilities to dig out product keys for installed programs if you want to repair/reinstall Word.
