We have seen violence in relation to reproduction. Do we always see it? No. Why do we not always see it, if it's a hard rule? If animals can choose to not follow a hard rule, does that mean they're being smart and picking evolutionary-safe tactics? If the evolutionary-safe tactics are best, what's the source of the unsafe tactics? How far back does it go?
We can only surmise that violence has been more common in the past. Do we know it? No.

The world is not as black and white as you want it to be.
