...or an interest in spacecraft and how to transit between two stellar bodies. so far i've put 3 or 4 monkeys in orbit, but have yet to transfer between the earth and the moon successfully. i have hit the moon several times and killed a few monkeys, and lost a few that were ejected outside of the earth/moon system, but i'll eventually land monkeys on the moon.

but right now i have 3 monkeys stranded in orbit with no fuel, and i have to figure out how to rescue them. one of them is the first monkey in space, the other two, i don't know who they are, but probably they'll have to space walk and monkeys will go floating away if you aren't careful.
very dangerous work, this monkey rocketry.

monkey rocketry? of course! i've just only now heard of it. it's beta. also i'll be gifting a copy to my nephew who is big into games and science stuff and propelling monkeys at high velocities.

when you buy you get all the rocket parts and i guess Career mode when it's ready. also the graphics are better, and the UI is improved.
the demo is good, but the full beta is more polished.

UPDATE: i know you're all concerned about Bill Kerbin, the first monkey in space, but he's fine. his command capsule, which had no parachute due to a technical oversight, was doomed to crash after re-entry. fortunately it turns out that his EVA boosters had just enough thrust to raise his periapsis out of the atmosphere. unfortunately, as he flew away to safety, two monkeys had to sacrifice themselves to a horrible fiery fate since i can only control one monkey at a time apparently.

I have achieved the ability to rendezvous. not only ship to ship, but also ship to Monkey. no small feat i might add, and has opened up the door to not only rescuing stranded monkeys but also the construction of a space station. So far i've launched a space station core consisting of a 6 way junction, 2 living/work quarters, a command pod, several fuel containers, a solar array, and i'm about to launch a space station service vehicle to help park incoming segments of the station, such as an observation segment and a refueling node for outbound trips to the moons and planets.

but first i'm going to try and park a lunar satellite in preparation for a lunar landing mission with monkeys and a little car to drive around.

will do. have you checked out any mods? there are some great ones.
The most important would probably be, uh, kerbal engineer. it helps with building rockets by displaying all the stats of the rocket as you build it.
it helps to make rockets that are efficient.
also MechJeb, which is kind of an auto pilot. i think it's mostly supposed to help with launches and landings, but you can use it to adjust inclination but that's like the easiest burn of all. i'm not sure how the rendezvous thing is supposed to work, but i do okay without auto pilot.

pictured: the initial space station core, a "stock" item you have to build a rocket under.

I didn't use mods for Minecraft, and I'm not sure I want to use them with KSP. I prefer vanilla gameplay and constraints, but the engineering mod sounds like it adds a missing feature.

Just last night I was wondering how to check rocket stats without having to view the info window during a test launch.

> I didn't use mods for Minecraft, and I'm not sure I want to use them with KSP. I prefer vanilla gameplay and constraints
yeah, i just wish i had payed attention during rocketry classes.

> the engineering mod sounds like it adds a missing feature.
yeah, it's super useful, and unless you want to do math then it's the only way to get delta V information. also it has a telemetry module you can place on the rocket that gathers the data in real time so you can see where there's problems or whatever. just tons of data.

> Just last night I was wondering how to check rocket stats without having to view the info window during a test launch.
that'd be the way.

pictured: MechJeb. as you can see it has ascent auto-pilot, which is nice. it's kinda like having a flight computer, you can input things like when to execute rolls, whether to auto-stage or manual stage, what altitude to begin circularization, and other cool stuff.
but yeah, it actually effects gameplay. and eventually it'll have career mode and you'll have limited funds and probably objectives and you'll want to know how to do everything manually. I can see mechJeb making one awfully dependent on it.

Externally hosted imagethis is the Helper Bot 3, which is actually the Taepodong-1, (which is based on the Shou-Dong series of launch vehicles and would have had it's legacy as the Shou-Dong 6c were it not for its radical new design.) what makes it a new class of vehicle is that it's an all liquid fuel setup, no solid boosters on this one. it has fuel lines that let all 6 engines burn, but keeps the main tanks full till you dump the boosters. then you just ride the main stage to apoapsis.
so far no monkeys have flown a Taepodong series launch vehicle.

well i got tired of satellites, you can't make a 10 mile one. so instead i built a spaceship. it's the heaviest launch yet, but it gets into orbit with 95% of its fuel. This ship can make it to any body in the solar system and back. it also has a 1 monkey lander.

the launch vehicle is ridiculous and required a ton of struts to keep from exploding

I fucked up the staging and disconnects about a dozen times, each. Separator rocket motors and throttle adjustment sequences were required to get the stages to separate without collisions.

The first stage took 24 large SRBs and 16 mainsail engines.

lol, that's insane. was there ever a point when you thought it was too heavy to lift, or were you just super determined?
there were several times i thought my spaceship wouldn't make it, but then i'd add more struts and get a little further -and really it was all the explosions and falling apart that after 3 hours made me say "i still haven't really even tested it yet" and not give up.
once i got it good and launched and it only fell short by a few dv i knew another stage would get me there.

nice job, looks very hard to pull off.

Externally hosted imageaaaaaand we're docked. it was like parking a bus on the back of a moving train, i tried for the underside docking collar, but that one was really tricky, so i just went in straight and docked from the nose. time to transport some monkeys to the moon.

squeegee !first/o5zA (OP) triple-posted this 13 years ago, 1 hour later, 1 week after the original post[^] [v] #419,697

Externally hosted imagewhat the game needs more than anything are monkey EVA strut guns to add struts when docking new modules. it would give the monkeys something to do besides plant flags and drive rovers. which of course is pretty bad ass by itself.
but when docking, even though i came in sooo slooowly and carefully, when the "magnetic coupling" or whatever latched on it started to roll around and then went i went to correct its position the modules started wobbling back and forth. i thought it would break apart and go tumbling, but i was able to exit out when it's pendulum like wobble period was at a minimum. when i started back up it was stationary, but not aligned. oh well.

picture: i tried to make the spaceship all 50's like and retro-ish. the fins, i think, on the lander will look proper

speaking of which, time to test the lander's functionality

Externally hosted imagestill haven't figured out how to get the monkeys back from the moon. right now they are waiting for the moon to be in a better position i think.
in the meantime i've launched a new destination along the same heading as the space station, just a few miles back.
it's a refueling tanker. it's huge, it inserts into orbit 100% full, and weights more than 100tons. it's way heavier than the space station because of the fuel. now that i've got a way for the monkeys to replenish their fuel supply, i can bring them back from the moon, and plan for a trip to Mars.

so far i've sent several satellites, but each has failed to come close enough to an encounter. i think my problem is that i'm waiting too long to make corrections.

the plan for mars will be to orbit satellites, download a mod that gives you scientific instruments you can add that map planetary bodies with radar, launch Mars Map 1, land a couple of rovers, and then send monkeys to mars.

Sorry, I'm about 2000 pages into game of thrones books and I've got a new puppy so the monkey space program has received little attention.

Okay, after thinking about it I've decided that a mission to mars would take too much time away from reading game of thrones books, so instead I'll send satellites first like I'd planned, and then do a rover mission this week.

Alright, back to game of thrones books.

@420,901 (squeegee !first/o5zA)

can you not build a station at the mun and launch from there?

You can. I'm just doing them from low kerbal orbit. But to do a mars round trip carrying a monkeys is a big effort. I don't know that my current fleet can even succeed at such a mission.

I may need to fly 2 ships and have 2 landers, one with a habitat and the other just the return vehicle.
