Today my girlfriends car was stolen and held for ransom by the city of los angeles and their gang whom we commonly call the LAPD. let me explain...
alexis and i went to runyon canyon today to enjoy some exercise and nature. we just got back from camping a few days ago, so she was being a sweetheart and allowed me to vent to her how hard it is for me to live in the city. the sillyness, the rush, the anger and mis-placed anger you receive from people on the daily simply because we all run around like chickens with our heads cut off. desperately rushing to the next event, the next scene, the next place where we might get the opportunity to meet someone who can help us become a star. this rush, this noise, the horns and honking and overall fabricated lifestyle that has absolutely nothing to do with what's real in this life. a lifestyle of vanity and materialistic needs. a life where you bust your ass for 3/4 of your life to obtain money, then spend the rest of your life trying to spend it. for what? does your audi hold you close at night? does your contract come and pick you up in the middle of the night when your car's broke down and you've been left in the rain and cold? what's the point of a multi-million dollar home when you have no wife that cares for you? where there's dead, uncomfortable silence instead of children's laughter? when that same trophy wife puts you in a home to die cold and alone because you both knew all she ever wanted was your money. but all you ever cared about was her making you look good, so all is fair. as we hiked and i got it all out, i started feeling much better. i went over why i stay here. my passion. my band. the music that i'm a part of will one day be fiscally lucrative and i will get to fully live out my dream. my dream to have a voice. to have it matter. in a world that understands nothing but power over, as opposed to power with, we've made this green paper our god. so i will obtain much of it. then i will have power. then they will listen. then i can help change on a larger scale this miserable set up we call an advanced society. so i reminded myself what i'm doing, why i stay strong and don't live somewhere more sensible. why i'm here on this earth at all. after over an hour of hiking and turning my frown upside down, we went back to the car. long set up for what you know comes next. we get back to the side of the road where we parked to find no car. as soon as i let go of the awful feelings of constraint i feel in the city, they towed our car. i've been parking in the same area for over 5 years now, but ahhh, today there's a new city sign up perfectly placed behind the branch of a tree. "no parking anytime." unfortunately for me, i fell into the category of 'any time'. please note however, the sign said nothing of it being a tow away zone. a stranger was kind enough to let us use his phone and informed us that many people had been getting towed. the city had just recently decided to post their wonderfully discreet new law, and gave no other warning to people that what we've done for years, is now illegal. now this is not uncommon. the city's citizens are used to getting bullied into paying unjust tickets. it's about as common as seeing a dog in a purse out here. but today they're pushing it. in order to tow a car, you must be in a tow away zone that is clearly marked, or you have to be obstructing traffic. which means, you guessed it, your car is preventing other cars from being able to drive a clear and safe path on the road. these things did not apply. because i have been going to the same spot, and parking in the same area for years now, i know where the white line is that you cannot be over legally. i made certain when i got out of the vehicle that i was where i was supposed to be. except now i wasn't. after our new friend let us call the towing company to make sure they had our car, we called my bud/bandmate brett to come pick us up. alexis is going to be late for work at this point. we sat in the sun on an extremely hot day with our water, cell phones, house keys, wallets and money all in our car that the city had illegally stolen. brett being the wonderful friend he is, rolled up in the big ol' band van, and picked our sweaty asses up. we went home, showered, alexis threw her clothes on so that we could go and try to get her car and get her to her job. which she works full time to try and pay off her car, and for rent, and for food, and for life's simplest necessities. fast forward to checking in at hollywood tow. (which we found out is run by the police force) brett drops us off and i tell him to go ahead home cause this'll take a moment. the cops will be here, one way or another. we walk in and they already know we're the one's with the kia. another paycheck. the older, white haired man behind the thick protective glass looks at me through the counter and says there is nothing he can do after he's heard our story. he gives me a piece of paper and says i can fight it in court, possibly get a refund, but his hands are tied. he shows me the citation the city's parking enforcement wrote out which said i was obstructing traffic, which i was not. so we've got the 'he said, she said' scenario now. i asked him how this is legal? how can the city just take your property, leave you stranded for heat stroke, and then tell you to your face that you're guilty until proven innocent? i have no proof, how could i? i got out of my car and went on a hike. he told me he could still do nothing. he told me he agreed with me, but it wasn't up to him. he told me it's how the system is set up, and that's just how it is. (flashbacks of highschool) i told him to put his piece of black and white paper down and talk to me man to man. i told him to stop with his 'law' bullshit and talk to me like a human being. i asked how he can abide by a system of black and white when the world is nothing but a shade of grey. he shrugged and said, "maybe some of us like the system." i will never forget that response. it's the response that has fueled me for as long as i can remember. apathy. giving up. taking what they give you. weakness. i looked around where these men worked. a dingy, smelly, dark, fly ridden shit hole. for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, you sit in this mess of piss and take strangers yelling at you because you never demanded more. you like the system? i don't buy it. the look in your eye tells me you're lying. your heart knows i'm right, knows that taking advantage of one another for one's own benefit is wrong. yet you take it, you accept it. you make it your own. so a dark, stinky hole is all you'll ever get. you got your mercedes alright, but at what cost? he asked me what i wanted to do, i informed him that i would be calling the police, and that he and his colleagues were pussies for taking the easy way out. you've joined 'em. to their benefit, they at least let alexis get our belongings out of the car, but this was awful in itself. they take her away, behind a locked gate to get to her car. it had to be her cause she's the owner. so i'm standing there as a bunch of car thieves take my girlfriend behind a steel gate. where i can't see her at all. i'm her protector, and i'm helpless. they're already stealing people's cars, how do i know they're not going to steal something else too? you can bet your ass i was looking for the weak point in that gate the entire time. listening. if i hear one scream someone's going in the ground tonight, and i'm going to prison. after the longest 3 minutes of my life, she returned, with all of our stuff, and i was reminded the situation could be so much worse. alexis got her phone and we then proceeded to call in our stolen vehicle. the woman on the phone said they'd try and send someone out. she asked her of her ethnic origin, and then asked if alexis was aware that the impound garage we were at was run by the police. alexis said that it didn't matter who ran the garage, our car was stolen, so we were using our tax dollars and calling the police for assistance. so we sat and waited. in the meanwhile we still chatted a bit with the dudes that worked the shop. the older man brought us a couple bottles of water and apologized saying, "we can only do so much to change the system." the look in this mans eyes were so sad, so helpless, he knew he'd joined the wrong team, but what could he do? so i thanked him, told him i was sorry, and that it wasn't personal, but i had to fight it. he said he understood, and we became friends in that moment. this man is not my enemy. but he is a part of the enemy. i talked to another worker there, a mexican man, about what he thought of the system. he told me he doesn't even park in areas close to towing signs "because he knows how it works." i asked him how it was fair then to people who don't know 'how it works.' he shrugged and said, "i guess it's not fair." i couldn't help but wonder how many of his cousins, and uncles, and sisters and brothers were sitting in prison right now for misdemeanors that are all 'just part of the system.' i reassured him that indeed it wasn't fair, and how it doesn't suck until it effects you. i told him that going along with the system may not affect his parking situations, but what happens when you have a gay son that's getting bashed on and the system does nothing to protect him? he just smiled. he too knew i was right. he has also joined them.
when the police arrived 40 minutes later, (not bad really) alexis and i greeted them with a smile and a handshake already knowing our outcome. but none the less, we gave 'em our story, and they agreed with us. and told us how it probably is an issue taking people's cars when they're hiking and left with nothing but shorts on and a sun burn. they told us how they purposely don't sign up for being on traffic violations because it's so unpleasant. they went to the impound employees and read the report. they came back with the same story and same piece of paper. i can try and get my money back, but i can't get my car til i pay. i told him we don't have the money. so how do we obtain our car to get to our jobs to pay for the ransom the city is making us pay? he said he understood, and that it wasn't fair, but his hands were tied. and i have to fight it out with the city. i asked them what they truly thought the outcome would be, that if it's a matter of a city employees word vs mine and the city is paying this employee to collect money for them, would we really get the court to rule in my favor? one officer told me to not be so pessimistic, the other said he'd probably be throwing chairs through the impounds office windows at this point. i told him i am not a violent man so i'm keeping it under control, but this is wrong. they apologized, told us we were right, and said it's out of their jurisdiction. they asked if we were going to be able to pay or at least get picked up. "i'm going to have to tuck by dick away and burrow it from my parents." i told them. "if i didn't have that back up, i'd have to go find a way to make that money, and then you guys would arrest me." he nodded and agreed. we shook hands, said thank you for coming out, then sat on the bench and let a couple tears drop. these men are not my enemies, but they are weak, and they have joined them. the older man with white hair asked us what we were going to do as he left for home in his vintage mercedes. he apologized again, re-stated how he could truly do nothing, and went home.
after straightening up we went to the counter, told the younger mexican man we'd be putting it on credit, and just bent over and took it. it's this or jail, and the violent way costs more. he gave us another paper to try and fight it but stopped talking about it when i asked him what the point would be. i can spend money lawyering up, rally fellow hikers, take days off work losing more time and money for what? it boils down to the fact that the city wanted my money, they've set up laws to do so, and when it's all said and done, they have the power. and it's their word vs mine. i left him with the question, "whatever happened to the Che Guevara's?" he had no reply. they took Alexis back to get her car after charging me $270. i looked up into the security camera, spat on the piece of paper telling me how to appeal, kept all my fingers down but one, and left after crumpling up that 8 1/2 x 11 piece of bullshit and throwing it down in front of them. on the way to get her car alexis asked the guy what kind of car he drove. "bmw...why do you ask that?" she replied with, "do you like your job?" "no, he said, but it's a job." she simply stated, "that's weak."

for whoever made it through this post, i'm surprised, but thank you. after this is all said and done, i feel even more blessed and inspired to do what i've been up to for years now. the sad reality is my story here is so ridiculously minuscule. we're talking about $300 bucks here. but the principles coincide with what people have been doing to each other since the beginning of time. it's so infuriating when someone is stomping on your freedom. your freedom to live, to eat, to sleep, to see who and what you want. the freedom to walk down the street without being harassed. to live a life without boundary and restriction. to be able to go to the beach and not pay for parking like someone actually owns our mother earth. to simply go on a hike and not come back to a ransom note by those you pay to protect you. the right to be a human being. my heart goes out to the oppressed who have seen real tragedy and always has. from children hanging from trees because of skin pigment, to the absolute disrespect and unjust treatment to those with different (and very necessary mind you) sex organs. to all the same sex couples who want nothing more than the right to love, and to those who have died because their deity takes a different form than someone else's. to all the citizens and victims of war that pay the price for their governments disagreements, and also to all the sheep, that have closed your eyes due to fear and worry. open them back up my friends. look right in front of you and see the truth. your hands are not tied. you have the power. every moment of every single day, you are at free choice. are you going to give in? will you cave when 'they' tell you how to live your life? or will you rise up, stay strong and clever? will you look in the mirror and tell the powers that run our world "no, i will not be tricked into taking advantage of my fellow man for my perceived self benefit." and will we as a people stop turning a blind eye to those who truly do come from less opportunity? will we hear their cry for help and put people at a fair starting line? or condemn them forever to a life of ghetto's, poor health, and an education that makes the decision between college and dealing drugs laughable? who ever decided it was a dog eat dog world? i refuse that. I, me, you, and we, are creating our reality. it's time we take our power back, and we start with ourselves. we start by seeing our fellow man as brothers and sisters again. we've gotten so far from ourselves. so far from love. it's our choice, and i'm standing here saying to the world, to advertisement, to tv, to hollywood and reality shows, to billboards and magazines and movies and more. i am so much more than a rat in a cage. i am so much for than a nice haircut in an expensive car buying you colorful overpriced poisons so that i can take you home and use your body for my own pleasure. i am a man. a man who uses his strength for good, and love, and compassion. a man who utilizes and exercises his body and becomes strong not to use my fist to fight my brother, but to lend you a hand, when you've fallen and can't support yourself. i choose life and love and openness and honesty, and i humbly invite all of my brothers to do the same. if not, i'm afraid our society will be doomed forever to a life of piss smelling garages and shiny chunks of metal. that which you give to another, you give to yourself. this is because we are all one. i've spent the last four years finding myself, overcoming anger, and hate, and worry and fear. seeing through the illusion so that i may fully understand it. and this is why i am thankful for today. these so called oppressors are nothing but fellow angels. giving me a kick in the pants to leave the spirit world, and get back to our reality here on earth. for there is much to progress. but i know we can do it. together.
