It's actually the other way around. They sign a 1 million dollar mortgage for a McMansion in Coto De Caza and commute an hour to a shithole like Santa Ana every day. Nobody buys a shitty house in Compton and commutes anywhere far away because people who live there can't afford to do that.
California, and especially LA, is very car-oriented. This happened by accident kind of, since we built OUT instead of UP like New York City, Chicago, etc. We had plenty of room to spread our shit out. And by the 1950's, we had built super-major freeways like the I5, which made commuting out much easier. It worked really well back then because driving was also a new part of the american life and there weren't so many cars out there. It was okay, because driving was fun and new and exciting. You could go for a sunday drive to the shopping mall or the drive in, or drive to the park and have a nice american picnic.
But now, the freeways are congested as hell, and nobody really wants to drive, but they do. A lot. LA is still extremely car oriented because that's how things were planned. People kind of accept it as a part of life here and just live where they want to and figure out how to get to work later. I think it's very foolish.
I think you'd find LA interesting. How it all works, and where it fails to work... You should make a trip out here sometime.
