Topic: What do you call a sequel that is technically a relaunch of a franchise?

Anonymous A started this discussion 13 years ago #27,538

For example, a movie that is a sequel as it is set after the events of it's predecessors, but a relaunch because it uses new characters.

Like Portal and Half-Life, or like Final Destination and Final Destination 3?

like the proposed new bill and ted movie where bill and ted aren't played by the original actors?

it's a sequel
and a relaunch
it's both

> uses new characters
> Portal
> Half-Life is technically not this either, as the spinoffs feature repeat characters like the scientists and the G-Man.

OP's definition was pretty much "shares a universe but has a new cast".

Everyone in portal shares the universe with half-life, but nobody from half-life appears in portal.

True, but Portal isn't really a sequel to Half-Life.

Also, I remember Gabe (or some Valve guy) saying that the characters from both games would meet at some point, but obviously that's not going to happen now.

Anonymous A (OP) replied with this 13 years ago, 13 minutes later, 10 hours after the original post[^] [v] #411,935

Example: A Back to the Future sequel where it follows new characters like Doc Brown's son and Marty McFly's grandson instead of the original characters.

Portal 2 takes place far in the future. Don't remember how far, exactly.

!KThEOwLwbU replied with this 13 years ago, 26 minutes later, 11 hours after the original post[^] [v] #411,945

@previous (Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx)

You don't remember exactly because it doesn't say exactly. Or really at all. I'd estimate it's been twenty to thirty years (it looks like chernobyl does now) which since Portal 1 took place during Half-Life 1 would work for a half-life/portal crossover.

Killer Lettuce !!iNo3FkiZx replied with this 13 years ago, 11 minutes later, 11 hours after the original post[^] [v] #411,946

@previous (!KThEOwLwbU)
Yeah, according to the Portal wiki, an indeterminate amount of time has passed. I can't help but feel it's been a little longer than twenty or thirty years, since parts of Aperture are virtually in ruins.

Still, a crossover would require a the continuation of Half-Life, so we likely won't have an answer for a while yet.

Didn't Gordon Freeman stop the Combine invasion when Chell was released from Aperture?

I don't think that it's specified exactly when Chell escaped.

There was a massive explosion at the end of Portal, that combined with twenty years of exposure could do a lot of damage. Look at this image, that wasn't even exploded. Just left alone, unheated and uncared for.

It's been strongly hinted at. Nobody's holding their breath for HL2:E3 but HL3 will probably be the flagship game of Source2 which is confirmed for development.

What if Valve decides to make Half Life 3 a separate story and then close off the Half Life 2 storyarc with a game simply titled, "Borealis"?

no a reboot is just when they go back to the start of a franchise and tell the original story again in a different way.
