Topic: Working out: When should I consume protein?
Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago#2,750
At the moment, I wait 45 minutes after completing my workout before consuming 20 grams of protein. I am doing weight training. Is that too much/little time? I read that the time you leave afterwards depends on metabolism speed — as I have a fairly slow metabolism I decided to wait 45 minutes. Is that right? Should I wait more or less time, or even consume the protein before my workout? Advice please (I would appreciate it if you cite your sources).

Take it before--it will begin to reach your muscles in just the right time.
Also, eating heavy after working out takes up resources that could have otherwise been used for muscle maintenance. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10331398
Protip: Eat cottage cheese so your body is constantly supplied with protein throughout the night.

It is true. Post-workout carbs and protein can help replenish supplies, but active people should eat protein with every meal.

For the best results, which honestly for someone who is new to lifting this really doesnt matter, when you consume depends on how long you are working out for. If you are under 30 minutes, consume pretty quickly following your workout. If you are doing over 45 minutes, start drinking it during your workout about 30 minutes in. Between 30-45 minutes doesnt matter too much. Liquid protein and twice as much liquid carbs. Saturate those muskles.
You should also keep workouts to under an hour.
You are a beginner though. You are going to make amazing gains in the next year if you keep gradually increasing the weight and eating enough, unless you are not doing the lifts properly.

It also depends on what kind of protein. The whey protein used in most protein drinks can be absorbed fast enough that it can be eaten right before or right after a workout. Then stuff like cottage cheese, as another poster already pointed out, is absorbed slowly enough that it can give you a constant supply of protein. And of course proteins like chicken, fish, and red meat should be eaten all the time.
