What I would prefer for this is for games (and hardware) to be developed that can track the gun so that when you have it held a certain way, the avatar holds it down. in the tf2, he is holding it pointing at the floor but the game avatar is pointing it forwards, and when he lifts it up the avatars arms don't move or anything, it would feel weird to me.
