Mojang added some big new items including horses, carpets, and leashes.

Horses are fucking fast as fuck. Kind of makes controllable pigs useless now.

Now that I think about it. Horses in their current state right now do seem to go faster than minecarts, but they can be a bit tricky to handle. I haven't tried handling them across hills or mountains.
