I'm an inveterate coffee drinker; I consume 5-6 cups with breakfast, and then another 5 cups or so throughout the day and I've done this since I was a kid so caffeine no longer has much effect on me. I can drink a 30oz iced coffee and not feel wired or anything. Just a tiny bit more alert. But I've noticed that if I drink one of those huge 24oz Monster energy drinks that I really do feel more energized. It can't be caffeine content since coffee has much more caffeine per ounce than Monster. Do all the b-vitamins and amino acids cause the energizing effect or is it a placebo thing? I don't think it's the sugar since sugary drinks make me feel lethargic usually.

I drank four 16oz cans of Monster today (the original green ones) and several cups of coffee. I did not crash. But then I have a massive caffeine tolerance (more of a dependency, really -- I need it to feel normal).

Energy drinks seem to hit me harder than coffee or soda.

I noticed the same thing. They give me energy where coffee does not. Like if I have two of the giant 24oz Monsters, I can skip lunch (did this a few times when I was working 10 hours straight and couldn't break for lunch). I assume Red Bull would be similar, but Red Bull is insanely expensive.

The taste reminds me of the chewable vitamins I used to eat as a kid, so I think maybe from the vitamin content which coffee/soda lacks. I will buy some B-vitamin complex supplement soon and experiment with that and see if it works.

I've also had a racing heart from energy drinks and never with coffee or soda. Do you ever feel sick from going so long with no food, and energy drinks on an empty stomach?

Not at all. I felt kinda hungry but it was ignorable. The only time I ever had any jitteriness/racing heart was this one time when I got some coffee I ended up not liking and I was raised not to waste food, so I brewed up and drank a whole can (one pound) of coffee in one day to get rid of it. It ended up being like a gallon of strong coffee.
The coffee was Cafe du Monde French roast coffee with chicory. I really like Cafe du Monde beignets made from the mix, so I figured I would like the coffee. I did not. But the beignets are wonderful.

I didn't know anyone IRL who drank coffee. Also the coffee was not very good. God that was horrible :/
